Ok, first off, I want to say to Dillon, in no way am I trying to take over your gig as the film short admin. Secondly even if I wanted to I couldn't do have the job you do. Ok, with that said, Here's my Idea to possibly add something fun to the forum.
Each week, someone will come up with a theme or an idea for the people that want to participate. There's no prize, Hopefully this will get some people out there shooting and producing films. It's for FUN
The rules are,
1. It has to be COMPLETE and uploaded to Vimeo by sunday evening at 6:00 pm. (we will make a page for this, and set up a poll)
2. It has to be shot that week, you can't use a project already produced.
3. You can use any camera, But has to be High def, for obvious reasons.
4. Here's the kicker. It has to be made with out any swear words or obsenity.
It can have mild Violance, but nothing too gory. I want this clean so families can watch without being offended.
5. It can't be any longer than three minutes.
6. The members will vote on the winner. Voting will be from sunday evening 6:00 pm- Monday 6:00 pm. Where the winner will be announced.
Ok, so there you have it, I hope some people will embrace this idea, and hope it encourges some folks to get out there and shoot something.
So next week will be the first contest. I will throw out the first idea. Then each week a different person will give a new theme.
First weeks theme is: Power outage. This is a good winter theme for those of you living in a snow belt. Good luck:hv20-smilie77:

Honestly those aren't too bad. Im just thinking in terms of having families be able to watch. I know many of the members have kids, and I thought it would be cool for a family to be able to sit down after sunday dinner and watch some indie shorts. Just use your best judgement, and if you have to use something a little racy, no worries, there's not gonna be any disqualifications. but maybe put up a pg-13.:hv20-smilie70: lol

I agree with antman about the profanities. But I think farting and drunkenness should be allowed. It's hard to find actors who don't need lubricating and after my crew has quaffed back a few crates of guinness it can get pretty flatulent on set.

I like the idea a lot, nice informal reason to get shooting.
"3. You can use any camera, But has to be High def, for obvious reasons."
I'm not sure I like this rule though... just thinking maybe someone might want to mess around with video on their point and shoot. Don't see a reason to discourage that, if that's what floats their boat.

Would monthly be a better schedule in general?
antman
2010 January 26th, 05:00
Im thinking eastern time zone. That was a good point I didn't even take in to consideration.
I think a weekly one would be good because it would change topics quickly, and it will increase everyone's shoot time and edit time. I know not everyone is going to participate every week, So I thought it would be cool to have it change quickly. Although this is a new idea, It may end up being more productive to do it monthly. And I thought the coolest part would be to see each film maker improve from week to week.
The clean (no cussing part is going to be a challenge for me as well) But I figure it will be fun for families to watch, and it's going to help the film maker use more elaborate ideas, and different adjetives to describe something other than dropping the fbomb.

I agree with ejolson, as i'm working 12hours/day 3-4 days a week...i'd prefer monthly...cause it doesn't give much time to shoot&edit when you work...

Cool idea! (and thanks for the compliments :D).I wanna see how this first one goes. If it goes well, I'll be happy to help out with moderating and organizing things (a new poll thread every week will get messy pretty fast, it needs to be organized, like the "game" forum). Very cool idea though, I like it. I've been very busy with school lately (just started college) so I haven't been able to work on a new HD Shorts contest at all. Maybe this will give me more room in between HD Shorts contests to work stuff out, without receiving 3-4 PMs a day asking when the next contest will be, haha.

Im stoked you like the idea Dillon, I would love any help you can offer in setting something up and modding it. I haven't the slightest idea at this point on how to set up a page for this. And I know the members would love to have you involved. thanks
@ej, I totally see your point as time is a constraint with many of us. How about every other week.(two per month) Maybe this will be a good medium as to see how it works out in terms of time and being able to shoot. If two is too difficult then we can always change it to one.:hv20-smilie77:
Also, if anyone else would want to help organize this your more than welcome too. Im not any where near as computer savy as many of you. and would love the help.:hv20-smilie09: hint hint. Jboy, Mr. Bien, Seo, huey, drapeama, Tcindie, Jinwood, KingD, anyone. lol

I dont see where it would be a problem using a non high def cam. I just figued most of us use hv's, A1's and dslr's. In fact if anyone has a 16mm or super 8, I would welcome that as well. So sure, Lets keep it pretty informal, and leave the Formal real film festivals too Dillon.:hv20-smilie77:

How about every other week.(two per month)
Sooo.. The Power Outage one has to be submitted by Sunday this week(as in terms with the every week idea). Or the Sunday after that(for the every other week idea)?
Sorry if that's confusing.

You must have me confused with someone else; I feel fortunate when I can decipher whether a thread errantly posted in "Questions, Problems & Observations" should be moved to the PC or the Mac sub-forum! :hv20-smilie50:
And here a somewhat painful confession: despite having participated in the very first short film competition at the forum, and being an 'official judge' on another, I didn't watch any of the entries for the last one! :hv20-smilie15: The timing was just atrocious for me (we had four separate productions of The Nutcracker come through the theatre leading up to the holidays; I'm still hearing Tchaikovsky in my sleep). :hv20-smilie119:

Yey everybody! The last 1 minute competition here has left a good taste and I have noticed that people still come here to watch them every day.
What I personally liked was that everybody had to do those three elements. This restriction is so helpful -sort of to 50% writes the story for me. Then it's fun to watch less perfect films because you find those three things in them all. And the one minute restriction made it possible to shoot everything in one day. Also terrific.
Thoughts about this one: Maybe the last winner should host the next round. He would make each round a bit different. He or she could then also be the judge. And what I always miss in these competitions is that the judge is totally unknown to me. I'd love for him to explain before the competition starts what kind of style he represents. Then when I watch the entries I can try to predict which film the judge will pick as his winner.
A few spontaneous thoughts...

i really like this idea, i'm gonna try to make a film at least once a month!
I think a monthly film competition might encourage more entries. A weekly competition could wind up being very limiting for those members who don't have much spare time, or who need to round up a cast or crew, and without entries a regular competition would quickly run out of steam.
If we go for a monthly competition, and promote it using banners like Dylan did with the last 60second competition, then I think we could be onto a winner.
antman
2010 January 27th, 08:33
Lets try bi weekly first and see how it goes. Then if it dosen't work out and becomes too difficult to do , then we can easily switch it too monthly. Part of the reason for this was to help increase on shoot time, and editing time, I know I can certainly learn to speed up the process. lol
So far here's the rules
1 bi weekly contest, uploads have to be posted by 6:00 pm eastern time.
2 clean language (keep it clean enough for kids to watch)
3 The winner of that weeks competition judges the following weeks comp. AND WILL NOT COMPETE THAT WEEK.
4 Any camera will work.
5 Can not be any longer than three minutes.
6 First competition will be on the subject of "POWER OUTAGE"
So far this is what we have. still looking for help in setting this up. ANYONE?

Here it goes...that's an awesome story...
I was rendering the video last night, uncompressed AVI 1920x1080, with the color grading i carefully applied...after I did a quite good (to my ears) audio mix in Sony Vegas, and I was very happy of the overall result. When I woke up this morning after all my work to have been rendered, I was about to upload the video to vimeo for tonight, as I'm actually working till 7pm, when I saw an error in After Effects about the render. I checked in "Computer" and i wasn't able to see it. Then I just told myself "where the hell's my HDD?" I mean, not physically, but in Windows...
I did a quick test and it appears that my marvelous 750Gb HDD on which 3 different projects were saved just died last night when rendering the video. Marvelous...that's awesome...at least one of my project was finished and rendered to DVD...I didn't lost everything. Damn...
Forget about me this week...i'll get another HDD and i'll get in the next one...

Ok guys, here goes. I fel bad I haven't been able to inter my own contest. Bit im trying like crazy to wrap this feature. I am going to do the short film.
Here's what I propose. I think we should change the theme a bit to get more interest. For the first submission deadline, I think we should change the theme to
"SERIAL KILLER"
What do you guys think. For this first one, we will void the no cussing rule, and you can have any amount of gore.
The first DEADLINE to enter, will be the sunday after next. I will have a film, I promise!!. I have always loved the concept of shooting something horror.
So everyone, lets get to it and shoot it.

Laughs, after my last two projects were corporate videos with talking heads, it'll be fun to get down to business with a serial killer. :)
For a prize, I'm cool with just the graphic on your username, I think the entry fee will push people away.
An idea... What if we have the host give out the prize? It could be as simple as Five bucks cash, maybe a small piece of extra equipment like a lens hood or a filter or some sort? Then the winner becomes the host and determines and gives out the next prize and so on?
Might make too much work, just thinking out loud!

2010 March 4th, 08:37
Cash prize is a good idea, but charging people to enter is... a bit lalalala. BUT, without the entry fee... there is no cash prize. The equipment idea would be great. What if you had the weekly film idea, and then the best video of the month got a certain prize, then at the end of the year... the best film of the year gets some sort of really cool prize (nothing HUGE... but still desirable)?
antman
2010 March 4th, 08:38
That works for me Danielle.
I guess since I made the idea I should be the one to give the prize. SOOO. I will take a look through all my gear and find some stuff I don't use as much then use it for prizes. I have some stuff that I know will be useful to others on here.
Daniel Rutter

I like that, let's say there's a winner every two weeks (1 per contest / 2 per month) and at the end of the year we choose the best of them : 1 out of 12.
Then we should have a year to get a decent prize to give, i don't know, maybe just a gift certificate on B&H? That way it's not a HUGE contribution, but it's certainly usefull.

You're probably right...i think the trophy reward idea was the best quality/price option. Is it only Mal that can work on such thing?
Maybe we should merge this thread to a sticky first, then write some rules and then it'll be official. Do you think 2 weeks isn't enough, maybe we should make it monthly? do you think this would help?
I'd say start this one due on March 14th and the next one on the early May maybe...that way people will have more time to work on something.

3mins is maybe a bit short...I don't know, let's set a limit: 7-8 mins max maybe?
antman
2010 March 4th, 18:59
Thats cool with me, i went with a short amount of time so people would enter without having to do a long project. I think it's a good idea to raise it up to 7min.
I think it's a good idea to raise it up to 7min.
To learn how to make a good movie, you should LOWER the time, not raise it.
There's nothing worse than to watch 7 minutes of NOTHING.
There's not many on this forum or ELSEWHERE that can command attention for 7 minutes. It's a SUPER TOUGH
feat even for the most professional filmmakers, with huge budgets.
My first short was ~14 minutes.....and I think I'm responsible for quite a few death-by-boredom.
I also sat through the selection (and judging) process of an international film festival with a few other persons.
There were numerous occasions we were considering going "Jim Jones".
drapeama

Vishus
2010 March 4th, 19:20
I agree with shorter. Under 5 mins. I think my script has me under 3 as per the original, but this might give me some wiggle room. OR, it could be the decision of the "host" of the current contest. Antman chooses this time, winner chooses next time. Kind of like poker, same game, but your turn, so you get to pick the variables :)
Well, maybe for the NEXT hv20 film festival we could do something like 20 seconds max, including titles. Now THAT would be FUN!!!
KingDucky

Been a while since I've filmed anything non-corporate, so I definitely felt some rust. I always find a way to leave out a shot or two. Hopefully I got enough coverage this time! I ended just shooting with the naked HV20, and then a wide-angle adapter for a couple of shots where I was backed into a wall and couldn't get any further. Though, Now that this is the next morning, there is a shot or two that I think would have been perfect for my twoneil. Oops.

I hope for you they will, I had the same problem earlier this week and I had to forget about the project...
And I won't say I'll try to get in the next one to appear as someone who never do anything...but I'm going to finish the Serial Killer idea, respecting the contest's rules [i think i had some great ideas for it], and I'll post it somewhere before summer probably.

Welcome back Mal. I thought something was missing. If you haven't found the Tavern it just started the other day. I'm sure you'll have plenty to add to it.... PM me for the password
Thanks, jboy! Yeah, I saw the Tavern link yesterday. When I clicked on it and couldn't enter, I got really pissed and rowdy, so I broke something, then went to a real tavern and got drunk. Ended the night in jail, having to listen to a one-legged midget sobbing about his failed marriage to an Austrian porn star named Helga Busendorf. Interesting night... So yeah, I'll PM you for the password!
Good luck with your short film, by the way. :hv20-smilie77:

1) Is there gonna be a poll to vote for the best short?
2) Can it be possible to post the names of the judges for Sunday?
3) How long is gonna be the poll for voting?
4) Do we start the next game in this thread if there's a poll or do we just start another thread?

Started getting ready at 5pm and just got home at 1:30am. Shot all naked cameras. No extra lighting. I was on my 40 on a stabilizer and antman was on his xh-a1 hand held. a few shots were with the cameras mounted plus a 30 and SD panny. All shot in one building. Most were done in nonstop takes of a scene with me and antman trying to stay out of eachothers framing. Everyone is now very tired. I'm picking crusty fake blood out of my hair. I now have a ton of editing to do..... tomorrow.... and beyond....

*Fixed link
Upload it here (http://vimeo.com/groups/33707/videos), and ask Shigeta (http://www.hv20.com/member.php?u=24556) to manage it, as he's the creator of the group, so he'll make it only avaliable to view starting Sunday 6pm.

What's up with Sony Vegas?
I've never used it and notice a lot of mixed reviews here.
Even Eugenia wrote, after editing her MV (the one before last) I nearly gave up making videos over it (Vegas). But unless you can pony up a ton of cash (for Avid) there's no choice.

I prefer Vegas for editing over Premiere, a lot easier and does pretty much the same thing...and it's cheaper.
But i wouldn't trade AfterEffects for nothing else in the world.
Daniel Rutter

Vegas is by far the easiest (and the only one I use) Editing software. I have an old version of Premiere... But I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use it! I prefer the timeline setup of Vegas myself. That said, it is fairly limited... and the 10+ lines of timeline on the screen at one kind of piss me off.
Hard to have that many (and not be able to see them all) with only one monitor :(
Sidenote: I'm just rendering my trailer out to HD now (I love Proxy files on slow PCs... its so much easier to edit with them :D), I'll be uploading it in a tick!

For sure i'm in with Shigeta, if Huey could confirm if he's with us that would be nice.
edit: maybe we could assign someone as a mod for this thread/contest? Just like Justin for the Name-That-Game subforum.
Shigeta is already in charge of the Vimeo group...

Okay, so apparently it was decided for me that I would be a judge :D I haven't really been following this thread too closely, so maybe you guys could answer a few questions for me. What are the judging criteria? Who is in charge of organizing the vimeo page? How many entries are expected (the vimeo page currently has no videos)? I don't really have any problem with judging (though I usually left that for other people with the HD Shorts contests). When this first started, wasn't it going to be a community voting thing, with a poll?
