View Full Version : Premiere support 24p or just some other programs?

Does any of the editions of Adobe Premiere support 24p?
I was able to make the footage actually progressive now, so now I just need to make sure I won't mess it up while recompressing/editing in a video editor. ;)

I know both CS2 and CS3 support 24p, I believe elements 3 and 4 do as well.

Does this mean with Premiere CS3 I wouldn't have to do the pulldown stuff? I'm ignorant on the whole subject of working with hi-def and 24P stuff, so a good slap and a link to a good article/summary of the entire workflow process would help me a lot :-) I've read the stickies in this subforum, but what I don't know is how much of that stuff is necessary to begin editing, especially if I've got Premiere CS3 (which I do). Thanks a lot.

No, I don't think so.
I still do all the pulldown stuff, but this one is the one that I found to work the best for me,
http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/07/13/canon-hv20-24p-pulldown/
Now that I got it setup, it's easy. I just load up the pulldown program, and add the file, and let it run.

Thanks for the link HD4me. Just the fact that they call it "removal of pulldown" instead of just referring to the process as pulldown helps a lot. I was having trouble understanding why you'd need to pulldown 24p footage, but I guess it's just a shortcut way of saying "removing pulldown." Seems crappy that Canon doesn't include the flags in the video stream. Luckily I have access to Premiere CS3 so I shouldn't have to worry about this.

CS3 doesn't automatically remove pulldown from HV20 footage. I think (maybe) you can set it to guess the cadence, but you'd probably have better results doing it manually with some of the available scripts.

After Effects CS3 does it properly. There is a chroma issue but for me, its not a problem.

After "fixing" the footage to make it true 24p, I choose the 1080_25 setting, then in the settings I change it to 23.97fps, making sure "Progressive" is selected, etc.

Ok, here's what I did.
1) Install CS3 Premiere.
2) Install the Canon 24P project settings for Premiere from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=98&platform=Windows
3) Put the HV20 in HDV(PF24) recording mode and Cinemode (24p). A lot of folks also turn on the vivid setting. See page 35 and 46 of the manual. Keep in mind that some options only show up in the menu when you are in Playback mode and other while you are in recording mode. http://www.camcorderanswers.com/manuals/Canon_hv20.pdf
4). Record your video.
5). Use HDVSplit to snag the video from the tape. Be sure to rewind first and sometimes you have to hit play for a second and then start capturing.
6). Follow Eugenia's installation TO THE LETTER to set up the rest of the work flow. http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/07/13/canon-hv20-24p-pulldown/
It seems like a lot but one you have everything set up it's pretty easy. Make sure you have a lot of hard drive space. I have a 500GB external drive that fills up pretty quick. Each tape generates 11GB M2T file. After processing that can generate a 40+GB AVI file you will import into Premiere.
7). Open Premiere Pro, create a Canon 24P widescreen Project, import your AVI file and start editing.
If you have the version of CS3 that comes with OnLocation you might want to consider capturing straight to the hard drive. Saves a bit of time. You do lose the tape archive though. You can capture both tape and drive too though. I set OnLocation to capture to regular MPEG instead of M2T (Click the menu button on the DVR-1500 and look for the option) and the pulldown removal tool seems to work fine on it. If you need any help my email it trevor.lowing at gmail.com

You dont have to film in 24p. Just use the camera like a normal video camera at 60i and enjoy the superb results. I'm surprised that a concern about 24p would affect your judgement about buying a HV20. Surely you buy a camera for the quality of its output?

OnLocation has a pulldown removal tool?

No, the time savings I'm talking about is the time to rip the tape to the drive. It's really slick software.

well i really want to film in 24p....i dunno i just thinks it brings the video to another level.
does any one have a link to footage that is shot using the camera's 24p without doing the whole pulldown thing? i know it wont be TRUE 24p, but maybe it will be good enough for me...

As far as detail and color, it will look as good as footage with pulldown removed. As far as motion goes, it will look similar to movies you see on TV. If they don't bother you, than neither will the HV20 24p with pulldown.
