View Full Version : Any footage taken when mounted to cars?

Hi
I have a camera mount that attaches to the inside of the windscreen (or outside, or on the bodywork) which I want to use to film on track-days etc..

I have a HDD based JVC right now, 2 problems with it:
1. It's SD
2. Been HDD based the vibrations at high speeds cause it to fail to write to the HDD.

Now I was going to go for the Panasonic that uses a memory card, but AVCHD is a pain to edit, and even Vegas which supports AVCHD from Sony cams does not support the Panasonic footage. (so much for an open standard)

So that has led me to the Cannon and back to Tapes. I spent all night downloading footage, must say I am very impressed with it! Then I saw the wobble thread and the helicopter footage :( Is this only a problem with 24p? Has anyone got footage from inside a car where the camera is mounted to the car (vibrations not hand held wobble) ?

Basically I need to be reassured that the high frequency vibrations from been mounted to a moving car:
1. Don't cause wobble.
2. Don't cause it to fail to record altogether.

Thanks

2 things right off the top of my head:

1) GREAT IDEA, if I have time, I'll check the HV20 mounted to a car.

2) What sort of mount [or car] do you have????? There shouldn't really be too much "high frequency vibration" if you have a good mount or a smooth car. :)

1) do it :)
2) Picked it up from a stall at Jpafest2007 picture attached. The pod is all metal and quite rigid, I drive a Mazda RX-8 which has a firm ride.

The JVC was OK at lower speeds, but motorway speeds on UK roads it failed to save clips.

Okay I see; yeah, I can see how that would be neat for the slower moving shots, but quite "shakey" when going faster. Looks like a neat little thing though.

Oh, and also, the RX-8 might not be ideal for this of course. Haven't you got an old Citroen laying around?? :)

LOL, what's the point in filming from an old Citroen? :) this is for high speed track days. It is not shaky, as it is so rigid, check out this footage, note the bonnet/hood, large movements are absorbed, but high frequency ones cause problems (the footage was on a smooth bit of road which is why it worked)
Right click, save as. (http://www.novelconcepts.co.uk/RX8OC/japfest2007/tekkenMotorway.wmv)

WOW, that's IMPRESSIVE how that absorbs just the right frequency of shocks/movement.
VERY neat! I don't think I can duplicate that smotheness, even with my pro-car mount. Looks like less really IS more sometimes.
Very cool.

(P.S. that of course was sped up in post, and you were only going 120 km/h, and everyone else was only doing 60 km/h.....just in case this thread is "monitored"...:))

checks... is your footage the footage mounted HV20 footage critters ????????????????????????

MarkDog, MarkDog....next you're going to ask if it was shot in 24p!! :hv20-smilie84: :) :hv20-smilie81:

No, that wasn't a HV20...Critters doesn't have a HV20...yet.

Yes it is from a JVC, I hope it is OK to post it, it helps illustrate my situation.

Yeah of course it's okay. Looks very cool, thanks for posting. :hv20-smilie77:

If we can get comparable HV20 footage, that would be nice also. No promises, and weather is not that good right now, but I will try and get something this week...

I just placed an order with equipment express. :) Mostly based on reading this forum and looking at the footage also in this forum. I look forward to adding to it.

I tried my HV20 in my car on the mount I have set up on my passenger seat (replaces the head rest). The results were not that good, http://www.socalspeedzone.com/incartest/incartest.html. My car is a 350Z with a stiff suspension so a lot of vibration is present. But my SD cameras (Panasonic GS250 and an old JVC) did a much better job, http://www.socalspeedzone.com/pages/zdrive012107/index.html. My hope is to isolate the mount with some rubber or foam to cut down the vibration. Or get a different mount, like that window one.

The mount I have is no better, the RX-8 has a similar ride to the Z. I spent a few hours looking for something that would go between the mount and the camera, but no joy. Shame. On the plus side scaled way down (youTube size) vibrations are not noticeable, but anything of a decent size is poor. I may try mounting it to the passenger window, maybe that vibrates less, prob not.

At least, unlike my HDD SD cam, this one actually records though :)

I taped some with the HV20 in DV mode and it was not as bad. Will do a back to back test of HD & SD and post the results.

I actually use my tripod in the car mounted upright for road trips and it comes out beautifuly. I travel the Florida highways at 70 to 75 miles per hour.

Edit: With my HV20 of course.
