Just curious... what on earth is so special about P2 cards that can justify spending $1600 on an 8GB card, while an SD or CF card of the same capacity costs less than $30?

There is no justifacation for it. Pani looks at like , "you either buy the card or you DON'T shoot" When there's no other alternative, and your at their mercy, you have no choice. This is one of the reasons I didn't go with their cameras. I find this rather sleazy.

LOL
this argument has been done to death.
p2 cards have a RAID of sdcards & microprocessors that protects the clips from any kind of error or prevention from losing any of your footage. its also pretty sturdy and can last long years before one gives out.
it goes up to constant 200mbps (or 500 to the new ones) compared to sdcard which is only 35 mbps (class 4) or cf cards up to 100mbps. (footage streams should atleast have twice the bandwidth to avoid dropouts.)
also, panasonic has supported the format and is STILL supporting the format since they introduced it on 2005 for dvcprohd (100mbps) and now avc-intra. (100mbps)
if you owned one in 2005, it will still work with the current latest panasonic cam.
its unreasonably priced high for people not in the business thats why they introduced the avccam (hmc150, hmc40) that shoots hvx200 videos onto h.264 avchd in to avchd.

I'm not sure where your getting your information from.
At B&H, the 64GB P2 E card costs $995.
