So, in general, in order to insert different 35mm lenses onto your HV20 you need:
1. A 35mm adapter by Brevis or Redrock
2. A lens mount for the brand of lens that you would like to use
3. An SLR by Nikon, Canon, etc...that you would like to put on your camera.
So, in general, is this what one needs to put different lenses onto the HV20? Am I finally on the right track to understanding this

Technically, yes. Though you don't need a brevis or redrock micro adapter.. you COULD build your own.. and there are several other makes.
You do need the mount for the lenses you intend to use, and you do need those lenses.
This is of course only if you're looking to use 35mm lenses. If you're just looking for a telephoto or wide angle, you can just buy a telephoto or wide angle lens that will screw onto the HV20.
The benefits of a 35mm adapter is a) you can use a variety of focal length lenses (wide/telephoto/etc.. also zooms) and b) you can get a shallow depth of field that is difficult (though not impossible) to achieve with a video camera.

Wow. Total mistunderstanding.
The 35mm adapter is device that uses standard 35mm lenses to throw an image onto a ground glass. The Video camera in turn is used to video tape that imagge. The resulting image has the depth of field properties of 35mm film cameras. That ground glass can be static, vibrating or spinning. The moving ones were developed because the static ones show dust and scratches easily.
1. Brevis and Letus are vibrating, Redrock is spinner.
2. Most adapters include one lens adapter, Canon and Nikon are most used because of their availability and good glass.
3. You don't need an SLR for anything, unless you want to use the same lenses to shoot still film shots...
