HD Short Shorts 2: A Short HV20 Forum Contest

Festival Format

Once again, this contest will take place without a theme. Instead, their will be three required elements that must be included in every film.

This competition will be limited to "short shorts", only films less than 1 minute in length will be accepted.

Films must be made specifically for the HD Short Shorts 2 competition.

Winners will be determined by popular vote. Voters must be registered with HV20.com and view all films.

Prizes TBA.

Festival Administrators reserve the right to disqualify any entry that does not conform to rules stated below.

Key Dates:

October 27th – Rules Finalized, Contest announced, Begin Submission acceptance
November 27th – Last Day for Entries
December 1st – Public voting begins
December 11th – Public voting ends
December 14th – Winners Announced
*All dates subject to change

Rules for film:

1) Films can be shot with any cameras and equipment, although I feel I should point out that this competition started as a contest for consumer cameras, so lets try to limit the number of films shot on REDs :D.
2) Films must clearly incorporate all required elements*.
3) Film durations are determined based on film content. Credits will not be permitted, but may be in the description section on Vimeo. The total length of film may not exceed 1 minute.
4) Films can be made in any language but must include subtitles if made in another language than English.
5) No offensive material is allowed. Entries must NOT be rated higher than "R" as determined by Festival Administrators.
6) Festival Administrators reserve the right to refuse or disqualify any entry that is found to not comply with Festival rules.
7) Entries must NOT have any copyright violations and all music must be licensed or royalty free.
8) All entries must be submitted with the enclosed entry form.
9) Submissions are accepted anytime between October 27th and November 27th.
10) Films must be posted on Vimeo.com (details below)
11) Films may not be viewed until official judgment period start date except by Festival administration to assure compliance.
12) Winners are determined by popular vote and prizes are distributed accordingly.
13) Films can NOT be advertised anywhere other than on HV20.com. Doing so will reult in immediate disqualification.

*Required Elements

To ensure that every film is made specifically for the HD Short Shorts 2 competition, every entry must include all three of these elements at some point in the film. Note: each elements must be in its own shot.

1) Prop - Clear bottle filled with brown liquid (cola, coffee, muddy water etc.). No labels!
2) Foley - Sound of knocking on a door or the sound of a doorbell (must specify in entry form)
3) Character Action - Stamp out something that is burning (cigarette, paper, bag of dog poo, etc.)

These elements can be incorporated any way the filmmaker sees fit, as long as they are in the film. The elements are NOT required to be a main part of the film, and do not have to effect character development, plot structure, or even camera placement. The elements can be put anywhere, at anytime, in any way in your film, as long they are not all in the same shot.

The location of each element in a film must be indicated in the submission form, using timecode.

Feel free to ask any questions in this thread.

2) Foley - Sound of a doorbell
3) Character Action - Stomp out cigarette/cigar/etc.

Can you clarify these two? Does it have to be a door bell.

And for the action, the character has to just stomp on something, or what does this mean?

Thanks!

koolpenguin89
2009 October 27th, 13:26
Yes, your film would have to include the sound of a doorbell ringing, and must include a shot of someone stomping/stamping out a cigarette or cigar, or something related to those (like a joint or something). Maybe i should take the "etc." part. The character doesn't literally have to stomp up and down on it, its just a phrase.

How about something on fire? Because I and I assume others who don't smoke don't want any drug related stuff in their films, and don't have access to such things.

koolpenguin89
2009 October 27th, 14:39
How is a cigarette drug related? I figured having a cigarette being stamped out would be appealing to both pro- and anti-cigarette people. The pro-cigarette people could have someone stamping out a cigarette butt after its smoked, the anti-smokers could have their character see some smoking and grab the persons cigarette and stamp it out. If its really a problem, ill change it, i just thought it was something that was pretty easy to incorporate into a film. Also, who in the world doesn't have access to a cigarette? I figured that even the members of the forum under the age of 18 could just explain to their parents what they need it for.

Just for future reference, I agree with tiny on this point: IMHO the more 'universal' the required elements, the better. For example the requirements for the sound of a doorbell and a bottle of cola effectively rule out any story set before circa 1900.

lol..I wonder if people purposely look for things to make more complicated.... aspirins are drugs..alcohol is a damn drug...insulin is a drug....there are more legal than illegal drugs...LOL...but I guess when one wants to sound condescending or holier than...well just look at the drug takers......LMAO/// gotta love it....

:( I guess your right, i didn't really take that into account. This is why i prefer contests with a theme, it gives everyone more freedom. But people wouldn't stop complaining about the themes, so i decided to give this a try. Just for the record, what kind of required elements would you guys prefer over the ones i have?

Well, it could be as simple a change as "a bottle of brown liquid" instead of cola, like tiny's suggestion of stamping out something that's burning. Instead of a doorbell, it could be the sound of someone knocking or pounding on a door.

As someone who is excited by the challenge of doing sci-fi/fantasy or period pieces, I always think it's a bit of a bummer when production requirements take those options off the table: "character carries a light" could cover torches and candles or lasers, so I prefer something like that to "character carries a flashlight."

JM2C, and I don't in any way mean to slight your fine work in putting these competitions together! :hv20-smilie77:

I think they are fine, but should be made a little more vague.

For example - A bell of any sort. That then gets rid of the date issue.

Stamping out something/anything that is on fire. That gets rid of several issues.

The bottle one I have no opinion on one way or another.

But I think by making these a little more vague, they are there, we will notice/look for them in each film, but it will vary each piece quite a bit more.

You're doing a good job. Everyone will have their opinions. It is up to you to take that feedback and improve upon what you have.

Keep it up! :hv20-smilie77:

Does it have to be a bottle? can it be a glass or something? It just seems unnatural to have no label on a bottle

koolpenguin89
2009 October 28th, 00:18
I would prefer it to be a bottle, just to make sure everything is legit. If your concerned about a label-less bottle looking hoaxing, you could always just have a tight shot of the top of the bottle pouring the "brown liquid" into a glass, and then just show the glass from their on out.

I read it as meaning no brand name lables, so your film is not infringing any copyrights. You could presumably create a fake brand name for your bottle. I'm sure you're not going to be kicked off the competition for having a fictional lable on your prop bottle :)

You know the name brand thing is a non issue if you use the product as intended or it does not disparage or cause harm to the company. Ie) some one drinking coke is ok, some one killing some one with a coke bottle... probably not.

You upload your video to your own account, and make sure its password protected (do not allow anyone to see it). The day before voting starts, i will PM all the entrants to tell them to remove the password protection, and then the videos will be added to the channel. Its a little complicated, but its the only way i've figured out how to get it done on Vimeo. Let me know if you need further explanation.

Bummer. We already shot with intent of using the a car door ajar/key in ignition bell. The rules don't specify that it has to be a house door.... The cigarette issue got an amendment. Can this slide too?

To quote:

2) Foley - Sound of knocking on a door or the sound of a doorbell (must specify in entry form)

It doesn't have to be a house door, but I don't know why you would infer "knocking on a door or doorbell" as a door ajar alarm.

The more I try to write something with the element of stomping out a cigarette or something on fire, the more I think it wasn't the best choice of element for location purposes. If the scene was to be shot mainly indoors, that element directs it outdoors to stomp something on fire, because I'm sure many people would prefer not to have burns on their floors. And as a door needs to be involved for the element of door bell or knocking, it makes it very difficult when you are forced to stray away from a indoor location to a outdoor location for a element that is "NOT required to be a main part of the film, and do not have to effect character development, plot structure, or even camera placement." Just my opinion.

Let the begging for week long extension begin:

Pa paa please!!!!

Between work schedules not meshing and rain delays, it simply has not worked out. Perhaps I still could have pulled something off, but things recently went from bad to worse: A tornado prevented me from filming. It wouldn't have been so bad if it weren't for the fact that it wiped out my house. Luckily my camera equipment was in a Zero Haliburton case, but the case was not water proof, and when my first floor flooded from the tsunami that quickly followed the tornado, my gear got drenched. Perhaps I could have dried my camera stuff off and still filmed, but the earthquake came rocking through my down, and swallowed my house. Unfortunately before I could excavate my house from the gaping hole, Mt. Hood went off - which would have been fine if I didn't live at the base of it! Of course the lava flow had to come flowing right towards my house, and lucky for my neighbors, the lava sank down into my sink hole and filled up the crevice along with the remains of my house.

Now I'm still hopeful to film, but it will take at least a few days before drill down far enough to recover my equipment, and then who knows if rain or work will attempt to delay things further.

OKAY! Rendering ours right now and will be uploading right after. WHOA Today was epic. Calgary (in Canada) had a horrible night with super icy roads. more than 200 collisions in the city and cars were everywhere. Just screened one of our other films "Experts Say" at a University and had to come back on the horrible roads in time to upload our 1 minute short.

Sounds like you have more important things to worry about than a film short my friend. There will be a film short three, Sorry to hear about your losses thats a horrible thing to go through. I hope every thing works out for you.:hv20-smilie77:

You know, I didn't even know Mt Hood was a volcano until I read your comment. The eruption must have happened on the day I spent dead for tax reasons.

hah.

But really, they say Mt. Hood is about due based off past activity. They say when it goes off it could actually be worse than Mt. St. Helens!

Is that because it would actually blow bigger, or because it's so much closer to populated areas?

So how many folks entered the competition in the end? My entry was right at the eleventh hour, I guess there must have been others in the same position?

I just saw Paranormal Activity and man I couldn't help but think what a cool idea it would've been for any one of us to do! Because the entire movie is basically shot inside the house of this young couple with a video camera.

That movie has gone on to gross more than $100,000 beating The Blair Witch Project as the highest profit to cost ratio film ever made!! Can you believe it?! A movie shot with a simple high def camera and edited with Vegas, yeah that's right: Sony Vegas reached that kind of mass appeal!

You know.. even if we didn't make it to Paramount Pictures, we could at least post it up on the 3rd edition of the HD Short Films on hv20.com. In other words, I hope the third installment of the short film contest will be of the Horror Genre. I'm sure it'll be super exciting to film something like Paranormal Activity and considering the kind of films Hv20.com members have come up with... I think we'll have fabulous results as well.

What say guys? Horror? I think it'll be fun! I'll definitely participate. It should be worth a shot! Don't you think? :D

Here's a challenge: a musical mockumentary western.

This sort of challenge would separate the boys from the men. :hv20-smilie55:

I'm a film maker on the edge and prone to violent outbursts of blubbering. It's really quite embarrassing. Please don't make me resort to begging. I just want to watch the films man. Please just let me watch the films.

Why me God? Why me?

UHMMM, WHY is it soo difficult to watch the films? Are we ment go on a wild goose case?
Seriously we all worked hard, lets be professional and get the show going. Im getting tired of waiting. I dont care if i don't win, i just want us to be a bit more professional. Sorry im being a di(% but i worked hard and even missed a days work to finish my film on time. Lets respects all thoses that tried to finish on time, made a 1 minute film( which can be a hard thing to do) and accomplished something. Once i blow off my steam ill be more "COMPOSED". That a shameless plug for my film by the way. Sorry i fell better now, thanks for listening!
