When rendering using wmv11 24p Make Movie, rendering grinds for 11 hours and then hangs at 90+ percent finished. The resulting file looks and sounds great, but very frustrating not to get the whole project rendered. I've tried several time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. MPEG2 renders ok, but the quality is much less.

Is there some special effect or other edit at the point in the movie that could be causing a problem? It could be a corrupt video clip. Try selecting everything on your timeline, copy it, then paste it into a new timeline and save it with a new name. Then render it and see if it happens again.

You could try rendering different parts of the project as separate files and then join the resulting files with a tool like asfbin.

Even without the hang, this has the advantage that each render will be shorter and if you change part of the project you only have to rerender that section.

No currupt file. It seems to do it on all long videos (over 30 mnutes) that I try to render. Is there another format in VMSP that would produce good HD quality to view on my pc?

I like the idea a joining shorter files. I don't know afsbin, but couldn't i join the files in VMSP and re-render with wmv11 - It shouldn't render anything accept the transitions between shorter videos, correct?

I don't know if Vegas can smart render wmv files or not.

It can't, it can only smart render HDV and dv-avi.
To the OP, make sure it is not a FAT32 problem where you are limited to a file size less than 4 GBs. You should always use NTFS file system for your video editing PC.
