Hey guys,
Am looking at the Cavision DSLR rig and see that it has a 6x viewfinder... with that magnification would we still need a monitor for critical focus?

theotically,
a external screen is not essential for film making with the 7D.

you have an HD 720p 3 inch screen, which is enough to focus your subject.

of course, for doing photos, you can always magnify the live view up to 10x

I have the CAVISION with a T1i and it is a dream to work with. Most of the time I have no need of using the camera's 5x or 10x focus assist. What I see on the LCD through the 6x eyepiece is usually very easy to focus with.

I have the kit with an extra "riser" piece (the T1i needs to be higher than the 5D MkII) and the "swing away" assembly. On the T1i the "fit" isn't perfect, the viewfinder sits just high enough to partially mask the bottom part of the LCD with battery status symbol and exposure settings so the "swing away" was a real good idea.

Even though not a perfect fit on the T1i, I am very satisfied with the kit.

On the 7D it should fit the same as on the 5D MkII.

YES. 3" even of 720p HD quality is just not large enough for the eye to distinguish the tiny details.

Update on CAVISION viewfinder described above:

On the 7D what I have fits and aligns on the viewfinder perfectly. I had to loosen 2 allen head bolts slightly and adjust lateral position just a tad.

A 3 minute job.

"patrykrebisz YES. 3" even of 720p HD quality is just not large enough for the eye to distinguish the tiny details."

With the 6X magnification of the CAVISION viewfinder plenty of detail can be seen to focus on. In the event there is still a problem we have the camera's 5X and 10X focus assist magnification.

An external monitor is not needed.

How old are you? If you're sub 30's and have sharp close vision, the 5d/7d screen is fine. :)

According to a Canon Press Release (http://www.usa.canon.com/templatedata/pressrelease/20090901_eos7d.html), "The Canon EOS 7D camera also features a new large, clear 3.0-inch solid structure Clear View II LCD screen with 920,000 dot/VGA resolution for enhanced clarity and color when viewing images." So it isn't actually 720p or HD.
