The is a setting in the menu called Output Onscreen Displays. When set to "on", the camcorder's on screen displays will appear on a TV or monitor connected to the camcorder. The manual indicates that this setting is for video or still mode.
There's also information about using an external display while using the RA-V1 with the ZR-2000 or ZR-1000 remote.

Maybe someone who's already received theirs (I'm waiting on Canon & B&H!) can clarify, BUT: pg 145 of the manual mentions HDMI limitations. But those limitations are because it can't manage setting a different component-out format while hooked up to HDMI. Perfectly sensible, that!
I'd be likewise keen to find out f I can get a straight HDMI feed out of the camera without any menus -- could be externally recorded without having to mess with AVCHD.

There's a fellow in Britain who's already done this and bypassed the AVCHD codec.
His name is Henry Olonga.
He has a ton of vids on Vimeo.
Here's his tutorial on how to do just what you want. Capture HDMI out bypassing the AVCHD codec.

Hope this helps.
