i just bought a canon hf100 for $250 (used)
and i'm wondering what memory card type or brands would be best for it.
a class 6 is what i need i think.
is ebay a good place to get a 'real' one?

All classes can be used, as they all have sufficient transfer rates to record video on. Of course, the faster the card, the faster than footage can be captured to your computer, so these classes do matter. It's just a matter of which you have more of: time or money.
eBay works, but for these cheap things, you could just go to an electronics store to buy one (you'll save on S&H). Just make sure the card is SDHC, as SD cards are not compatible.

Not exactly, Seo. You need at least a class 4 card to record in full quality. A class 6 won't gain any video quality for you but it may transfer to the computer faster.
I use class 4 PNY 8gb cards, which Best Buy sells for about $30 each.

is the speed important in a card?
the camera is 17mp/s
does a card need to be faster than that to work efficiently?
i'm looking at a sandisk extreme III 16g card.

The card only needs to be class 4 (which is referring to the speed). I believe a Sandisk Extreme III is class 6. You only need a Sandisk Extreme II (class 4), but if you've got the extra cash to spend, the card will be a better investment towards future technology; i.e. camcorder that requires class 6 card. BUT like pro-hobbyist said, you only need a class 4 and anything higher will not help the camcorder's performance any more.
I just got one of these two days ago. Seems to be working great in my HF200: Linky (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134617)

i picked up a sandisk extreme III 16g class 10 today.
it was $79 at best buy in toronto.
it should be $219 normally so i bought 6 and may resell them.
or keep one and take the rest back in 14 days. :hv20-smilie84:

Yes, sorry for the confusion. I forgot to add that you'd have to record in a lower quality mode in order to use a lower class card.
Class 10? Didn't realize those were on the market yet... Hope it works out!

I work with a pair of HF100's and a Canon T1i. My preference for the HF100's had been SanDisk and PNY Class (4) 4GB and 8GB cards but the T1i requires Class (6) and since Canon tech reps have been advising SanDisk Extreme III for the T1i that's what I buy now.
They also function fine in the HF100's so the advice on "futureproofing" a bit should be considered. I had actually ordered one Extreme III 8GB to use in the HF100's with that idea in mind and when the T1i arrived it came in handy. Important to remember when switching card from one type of camera to another it needs to be initialized in the cam it will be used in prior to trying to record on it.
Some cameras can be a bit "brand" finicky and the T1i may be one such. One user found Kingston Class (6) cards could not "keep up" with the camera, a buffer bar would appear on the LCD and when it filled up video recording shut down. He was losing video this way and this occurred with 3 different Kingston cards. Canon tech support recommended the SanDisk Extreme III and his problem went away.

:hv20-smilie50:yes,
it's a Sandisk Extreme III 16gb 30Mb/s 200X class 10 sdhc card.
UH OH>>>> i just read this...
*1 : Movies cannot be recorded when the recording mode is set to MXP (24 Mbps) or FXP (17 Mbps).
*2 : Because the Speed Class 10 became standardized after camcorders were released, movies cannot be recorded on the Class 10 SDHC cards when the recording mode is set to MXP or FXP.
what to do.
it seems a lot of people are returning the class 10 cards.

nope, doesn't work.
my hf100 won't accept it in the high quality mode.
my digital camera won't accept it either.
back to the drawing board.
i read the Silicon Power Class 6 SDHC, 16 GB card is good.

That's quite a bit dissapointing. Whats the point of such speed if its unusable by any (not all) current camcorder/camera? There was a deal on these recently where people were buying three at a time for a big rebate; there are going to be some unhappy people.
Take them all back to Best Buy. When you return it explain that it is incompatible with your camcorder which instructs a class 4 or higher. Any reasonable employee should be willing to give store credit for the opened one.
EDIT: for the one that you opened, you could always try connecting it to a computer and formatting it as fat32. Perhaps there is something odd about the way it comes formatted? Just a thought.

bit late to the party but my HF100 records to class 10 cards in FXP mode. Admittedly I've only had the camera for less than a week but it works fine (I am on firmware 1.0.2 - updated the firmware as soon as the battery had charged).
I went for class 10 rather than 6 purely to speed up transfers to my PC, not because it'd give the Canon any benefits.

Adrian, I was so excited when I saw your post. I went and upgraded my HF100 from 1.0.1 to 1.0.2 (confirmed) but it still doesn't recognize my Class 10 Sandisk Extreme SDHC! (ie: no FXP:hv20-smilie36:) Could there be anything else I missed? Anyone else have luck? Thanks.

This is why I've stayed away from Class 10 cards with my HF11. I've been using PNY Optima class 4 cards.
