Hey all,

I was all set to pony up some dough for the HFS100 to replace my SD event cams then this came along.

http://i.i.com.com/cnwk.1d/i/bto/20090819/IMG_2815_610x452.jpg

Pic is from this (http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10313217-1.html) page.

It's the new HFS11 and for only (heh) $120 USD you can get an actual LANC (RA-V1) that plugs into the hotshoe!

Awesome! Although the RA-V1 is NOT backwards compatible with the HFS10/100 :P

That and tremendously improved OIS has made me reconsider my purchasing agenda.

I will wait a month to see the cams and how they price out up here in the GWN.

Decisions. Decisions.

sincerely,

MT

What does that lanc do. Who said that this ois is tremendously improved?

MistahTibbs

Well, apart from expanded internal memory (64 GB) there was information indicating the OIS had been improved considerably.

I believe that's in this thread. (http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?t=27555)

As for the controller?

There's a zoom rocker, record button....large dial top center? (focus?), "thumb" dial on right side (exposure???), numerous buttons (perhaps to toggle between manual and auto modes?)

Love to see more detail. I'm sure that'll come soon enough.

sincerely,

MT

hmmm.

Turns out I mistook what the image represents.

It IS an HFS11 and IT IS the LANC adapter......

Pictured on the HFS11, the LANC adapter is that little assembly on the hotshoe. However, THEN you have to get yourself a LANC controller to plug into the LANC adapter ($120 USD) So your costs go up a bit. Heh. Quite a bit actually.

I believe the controller shown on the tripod handle in the pic is a Canon ZR-2000 which runs around $300 USD. Ouch.

The large dial is the zoom speed control, the thumb dial on the right is for focus/AE shift, to the right of the zoom toggle is the "magnify" button (to assist focus?), to the left is the "peaking" button, below the zoom speed dial is the "push AF" button, to its right is the switch between Auto & Manual focus. To the left is the "display" button and above that (left of the zoom speed dial) is the "standby" button.

Sooooo. This changes things a bit. Still, I like that LANC is finally going to be available.

sincerely,

MT

Hi MistahTibbs, are you sure the new Lanc adapter can not fit the HFS-10???

The page that you refer and use the photo for reference states...

"The $120 RA-V1 Remote Control Adapter adds a LANC terminal to camcorders that use Canon's Mini Accessory shoe." As long as I remember the HFS-10 uses the same Mini Accessory Shoe.

Will need more clarification
Thanks,
Luidoly

Hi MistahTibbs, are you sure the new Lanc adapter can not fit the HFS-10???

The Canon website states the RA-V1 LANC is only compatible with the HFS11 & HF21. (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=177&modelid=19063#SNAModelSuppliesAct) - Scroll to the RA-V1 near the bottom and click on compatible products. (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SupplyModelCompatAct&modelid=19062)

However, doesn't it seem more likely the ability has always been there just not implemented until now? Sony D8 cams were like that. With a minor hack you could open up all kinds of options like zebras, etc that were only available on cams many times more expensive. heh.

I'm hoping that, while they say the LANC adapter won't work with the HFS10/100 that, someone will....*ahem*..."find a way." :D

sincerely,

MT

Canon pumps out new models fast. The LANC feature was highly needed in my book. Now I can finally get a LANC controller from VariZoom.

The LANC feature was highly needed in my book.

Word! (I so wish this was available for the HVs!) :hv20-smilie36:

I suspect you already know but for others who may not, LANC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LANC) is a simple camera control protocol which allows wired remotes to control basic camera functions like record start/stop, zoom and focus on many Canon and SONY camcorders (Panasonic has a similar but incompatible system). You aren't limited to Canon's rather under-featured and over-priced LANC controllers: options run all the way from fairly primitive (http://www.adorama.com/SUVRC.html) $40 models up to sophisticated (http://www.adorama.com/VDVZROCK.html) studio-style variable-speed thumb-rockers costing a few hundred. Most use simple minijack TRS cables. Great not only for tripod use but any time the camera's on a jib, car-mount, etc. where it's inconvenient to push buttons on the body.

Anyone know what the filter-ring size is on this? Looks bigger than the previous 37mm to me.
LANC could be enough to persuade me to move over from Panasonic.

Hey folks,

Good news!

The RA-V1 LANC adapter apparently DOES work with older Canon cams!

According to CCinfo.com they've tested it and it also works on the HF20, HF S10, and HF S100. ( http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Canon-Unveils-HF-S11-Camcorder-Plus-Wireless-LANC-Controller-36970.htm#) (Scroll to the last comment by David Kender, CCInfo.com EiC

Good news indeed for those who have those models.

It does exclude the hv40, so presumably also the hv30 and 20.

thewinelake

It'll only work with camcorders that have the mini style accessory shoe.

But 58mm! My Raynox 6600HD has a 52mm thread, so that's a bummer. I wonder if it would work with a step-down ring?

Those are certainly good news, hopefully will work also with the Varizoom, LANC remotes.

Thanks

Those with Raynox WA lenses might be interested in this from Raynox:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Mr. Lake,

We would like to report our test results for Canon HF S11 as follows.

HD-6600PRO-52 with RA5258A
It can be used in 16:9 mode, with effective zooming 1x - 5x.
However vignetting occurs when used in 4:3 mode.

As previously advised, HD-6600PRO-58 is not compatible with this camcorder
since its rear part may touch a lens cover protection.
Instead of it, SRW-6600-58 Wideangle Lens 0.66x can be used without any
adapter ring.

Please refer to our updated compatible table for details.

I also ordered via B&H -- no luck on getting any estimation on actual ship date other than "September" though... :/

Anyone have any better info?

(Hoping the d-OIS is worth the extra $3-400.... :) )

Wait wait, so this is a device we plugin to to the top of the mini-shoe, and then connect it to some remote control on a tripod for remote control over Zoom/Focus/Aperture etc? Dang that's so awesome, so it works with the HFS10 and HFS100 right? The guy updated the page and said

UPDATE:

Camcorderinfo.com has just spoken with Canon USA in regards to compatibility between the RA-V1 LANC controller and camcorders other than the HF S11. Canon informed us that in some instances—including the simultaneous use of an exterior mic—there could be come audio interference (i.e., buzzing).

Our review of the HF S11 should be published today or tomorrow, and we'll address this newfound issue as soon as possible. Apologies if additional testing may need to wait until later next week.

Thanks for all the eager questions.

Has anyone tried it out yet with the earlier models and noticed any type of sound interference?

Anyway I would like to see a link to the actual thing you guys are talking about, I'm soo confused about everything I read on this forum (camera noob)

I'm considering getting an HF S11 as a back up to my HV40 and I'm also totally digging that remote control option.

But does anyone know how one might also mount an external mic (since this is a must for me) while occupying the hotshoe with the remote?

Thanks for any comments.

Yeah, same question here. I was reading about a LANC terminal on the new HFS models (20, 21, 200). Got exited, but now it seems that you have to buy an accessory (RA-V1) which will substitute an external mic! If serious filming, you need both. So how can we solve this?

I am sorry if this question has already been answered i am new and still working hard to get a grip on this forum and how to navigate so please bear with me. My question is i remember reading somewhere on this forum guess was by Takyi? Not sure but read about lanc controller for Hv20- it was a rig he made himself any ideas on how to do this or if there is an already made system?

My first post. :hv20-smilie77: I've checked through multiple links and comments but haven't seen if anyone's tried the HF200 with the RA-V1 LANC remote. I'll give it a try and see if it works then post what I find. My apologies if it "does" exist somewhere and I missed it.

Just received and connected the RA-V1 with the HF200. I'm happy to say that it DOES work. I did not have a sound problem, either, like I've read others did. Here are a few pix of the tested rig. Below the camera is a Beachtek DXA-2T, which is why I don't mind losing the camera's hot shoe. I never used the hot shoe, anyway, so no loss for me. The camera that the RA-V1 will go on is another HF200 which is always mounted to a crane.

Hope it helps those looking to find out if the Canon RA-V1 works with the Canon Vixia HF200. It definitely does. Again, some have said that they still have some audio issues, but from my experience, I didn't. Just lucky maybe?

I submitted an update early yesterday with photos but do not see it. Essentially, though, I found that the Canon RA-V1 LANC Remote DOES work with the Canon HF200, even though the accompanying documentation says it does not support it. Some have said that they found that the sound was not good, but for me, I did not have an issue with that. Maybe I'm lucky?

So if you have a HF200 and wondering if the RA-V1 works, mine did. I did find that the camera had to have the SD card installed or it would shut off. Once I put the card in, the unit stayed on. Focus worked great and I have been testing it on two separate HF200 unites.

One is my primary rig while the other is used with a crane. The actual LANC remote is an eBenk EBRX-801 obtained from Amazon, and I have tested all functions except the photo shot. I never use it so to be honest I didn't test that. However, everything else works very well.

For zoom control, I have found that the best setting for a smooth operation is the second position below the Slow setting. It stayed consistent all the way in and all the way out, whereas other settings seemed to go slow then speeded up.

Beyond that, this was a good, affordable option and I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Hope that helps!
Phil
