Hey. I'm new to the whole DOF adapter world, BUT I have long time in still biz. I notice that none of the DOF adapters have what most still vets would immediately put on there, a focus arm. Why is that?

I just got my adapter from twoneil this week. After playing with it for a couple of days, my footage is great. The adapter is not easy to use. There is a learning curve on it, but buying from twoniel will save you time and money on the mistakes you will make if you assemble your own. I could post some screen grabs if any one is interested?

Well,
I received mine two days ago, and I gotta say, twoneil did a great job making this!
It is exactly like promised. The materials used were really great quality, and it came with instructions!
The picture quality is above what I expected for this adapter, and I'm really positively surprised! Footage looks very good, and I don't know what Hv20Oceanside means by a learning curve, b/c I had it up and running in like 3 minutes, from out of box to already focused and shooting.
Also, this is a great guy to make a transaction with, everything was very feast, he was prompt on responses, shipping was fast and before expected.
I give this whole experience including the adapter a 10/10, as everythign surpassed my expectations.

i received mine a few days ago :D
i'm testing a Nikon 50mm 1.4 Nikkor but i ve tried a 28/70 nikon zoom too (not bad but finally not so good :) )
I'm nearly sure that a 50 mm lens is a perfect choice (1.4 or 1.8 no big difference).
So, the adpater seems to works veryyyy well and the DOF can be extremly short !!
At the begenning, using a such adapter isn't really easy. You have to find your settings to get the pictures you want (2 days for me lol), the picture is inverted, etc. .
I paid $238,00 CAD in total cause the shipping to France is very expensive.
$238 CAD = round 160 €uros = round $238 USD
So thanks Neil ! your stuff is good :)

Impressive. I think this is the most affordable 35mm adapter out there. Now to get more sales going, I suggest you begin to advertise in different forums and everywhere else, and offer to sell it with a step up/step down ring set to make it universal so that people (Or should I say film makers/videographers/cinematographers?) could use this unit with other camcorders as well. But thats my two cents, good luck :hv20-smilie03:

A small mirror, eh?
sheer genius, that just might work.
Then there will be a market for the best homebuilt image inverter !
What about using two mirrors, like a periscope?

The best solution IMHO is flipping the camera, and using an external monitor with a resolution > the built-in LCD's, since focusing cannot be left to the AF, and focusing HD on that tiny screen is not easy either.
Kazuka
2007 December 11th, 06:17
What I do is I flip the lcd screen and put it back in its closed position. Now it's at least upside down, only downside is you have to look at the lcd on the side of the camera.

will this adapter require any additional support from rails to stop it falling off?
will the Canon WD-H43 0.7x Wide Angle Converter work with this dof adapter? is the adapter only fro the 50mm nikkon or can u use a wider nikkon lens like the 100mm or Nikon E-series 28mm
does the image appear upside down on hv20 lcd?
how much does the adapter weight?
thx maz1989,
Worley
2007 December 17th, 02:24
1. I would recommend some support, but rails are not necessary. Just a simple telephoto lens support will do. The Manfrotto 293 for example. This not only supports the adapter, but helps in changing the focus.
3. The image will be upside down, yes.

2007 December 17th, 07:18
In the description it lists "partially dust sealed". Can someone explain in greater detail what this means?
Worley
2007 December 17th, 09:14
The end that attaches to the HV20 is protected with a UV filter. This prevents dust landing on the focusing screen.
The end to which the 35mm lens is attached has no such filter, so dust is free to fall on the focusing scree. So keep the lens screwed on when the adapter is not in use (and clean the screen as instructed before fixing on the lens for the first time.

Stephen
2007 December 19th, 13:36
Hi all- first time poster here, though long-time viewer (seems to be many of us like this huh?).
I was wondering if anyone had had any luck devising a way to correct the LCD output in real-time (ie- while filming) when using the adaptor. If so, what were your results? I understand mounting the camera updside down would work well for this as well, but then how do you support your adaptor when it is flipped upside down?
More questions- how are you guys shooting with this setup? Is it always tripod mounted or are you guys 'running and gunning' it handheld? How does this setup work with a steadicam setup (a la the merlin, steadicam, DIY setups)? Wouldn't the 35mm adaptor severely through of the balance when working with these setups? I was wondering if this was even a viable option since more than likely you'd be unable to mess with focus while operating a device like this.
Sorry for all the newbie questions- just a lot of thoughts running through my head. I recently purchased my DV20 and I am planning out my mods carefully now. Thanks so much!

I'm planning to buy one of this adapters but the fact it's a static one makes me think. one the other side vibrating ones are lot more expensive.
Which types of lenses can we use with this adapter? Can we use this adapter with a variable zoom lens instead of a 50mm lens? And how much do those variable zoom lenses cost with a f/1.8? I have no photography background so please excuse my question.

I would assume you can use any manual focus nikon lenses. You should have no problems with using zoom lenses. The problem with zoom lenses is they're slower so you're going to need more light than you would with a f1.8 lens. Typically you're looking at spending more than the adapter costs to get faster zoom lenses.

2007 December 28th, 13:23
Hi,
Sorry for my basic-poor english, but Im Spanish.
I have 3 questions.
1) Whats the difference with/without vibrating system? Maybe the "noise"?
Becouse in all videos I see a really sharp quality of photo.
2) Its neccesary to "flip" the footage by post? I mean, maybe when I record
the movie I see all "flipped" Down is Up and Left is Right, and then I have
to fix the problem by the software.
3) It works with all Nikon Lenses? Becouse my girlfriend have a Nikon 70D with at least, 2 different lenses. Can I use it or I have to buy an speccific one?
Thats all.
Thanks.
Banacek.
Rikki
2007 December 28th, 16:10
1) pretty much, or sometimes you will be able to make out the focusing screen in the final footage - and any dirt or dust is immediately noticable.
2) yes, simple 180 degree flip in Vegas sorts it out
3) you really need a fast lens, ideally a prime due to light loss. Im using a f1.8 50mm but will be going for a 1.4 shortly.

1st post here, and I'd like to admit up front that I'm not an HV20 user, but I came across this 35mm adapter discussion...
I've used several Professionally made 35mm adapters and some home-brewed systems like this one before, and as long as the focal distance between your 35mm lens and the matte screen is constant and according to lens mount specs, all compatible lenses should work.
I've got a pile of old Nikkor (and various other) lenses that I've inherited collected over the years for my 35mm gear, and have successfully tested or used the following on various 35mm adapters:
28mm f/2.5 Vivitar for Nikon
28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-D Nikkor
35mm f/2 Nikkor P
50mm f/1.4 Nippon Kogaku P
50mm f/1.8 Nikkor P
55mm f/1.2 Hanimex M42/Pentax mount adapted for Nikon-F
80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D Nikkor
85mm f/1.4 Nikkor AI-P
85-205mm f/3.8 Vivitar for M42/Pentax adapted for Nikon-F
105mm f/2.5 Nikkor P
135mm f/2.8 Nikkor P
200mm f/4.0 Nikkor P
300mm f/2.8 Nikkor P
300mm f/4.0 Nikkor P
Depending on loss of light through various adapters, some lenses worked better than others. The only lenses that proved difficult to get enough light for were the 85-205mm Vivitar, and the 28-80mm Nikkor, which are both relatively dim lenses compared to the Prime lenses, and pro 80-200 f/2.8 zoom lens.
The longer focal lengths are also difficult to work with, because any lens jitters that you'll get from adjusting the focus will be highly visible.
Below is a listing of lenses that I had vignetting issues with on Pro 35mm adapters:
10.2mm f/? AF Nikkor fisheye
14mm f/2.8 Nikkor "full frame" fisheye
16mm f/2.8 "full frame" fisheye (3rd party lens, for Nikon-F)
ALL Nikkor DX series AF-S lenses (plus, no aperture control on the lens!)
Right now, I'm getting set to do a DIY kit so that I may have this fantastic depth of field not only on my 35mm cams, but on my MiniDV cam.
Great camera work, fellas! I like what I've seen on this forum.

Hi!!
I've been received the 35mm static adaptor for twoneil, and I would like to say that IS GREAT!!!!
So, is a little bit to operate properly, but in three or four days everything is ok.
Now, my actual problem is to buy an external monitor to flip the image, and find the right support in my tripod.
Any Suggestion?
Thanks, and over all, MANY THANKS to twoneil!!!!

If I order one of these, do I need any additional adapters or step-up rings or anything like that? With just a HV20, could I order one and put it on?
Read the fine print. It says that you do not need any additional items except for a 50mm Nikon lens. The step up ring comes with the adapter.

I have some questrions about this:
1: what is the difference between a static adapter and a none static?
2: what does it means "without an achromat"? (what is an achromat?)
Thanks for all help :)
Lederhosen19
2008 February 26th, 20:31
svar -
1. The difference is that in a non-static (A vibrating, for example) the focusing screen is slightly vibrated to create a better image. The other kind is spinning. This provides the best video, but is the lest common.
2. The achromat is a lens put between the camera and adapter to create a clearer image and reduce barrel distortion and edge blur. But this is not necessary for the HV20 since the thread size is 43mm.
Hope this helps!

I assembled 35mm adapters with an EOS mount for the Canon EF before.
I decided to discontinue them since I highly recommend Nikon lenses instead.
You will be able to control the aperture of the Nikon lens; you cannot with the EF.

is it realistic to focus with the built in LCD using this adapter?
also, do i understand correctly that if you flip the LCD upside down and then put it against the camera, the image will be right side up but still inverted left to right?

I'm very interested in this. Though I still don't understand some things.
The HV20 will be zoomed in to the focusing screen, so in fact is only filming the picture off the adapter. This should mean I have to focus with the adapter. Right? How is that achieved? Is there a way to do this remotely for steadycam use?
How many lenses will I need? The raynox hd6600 won't work I guess.
Will I have to measure the distance of the camera to the filmed object and calculate the DOF, then adjusting the lens?
There seems to be alot of reasons to buy this adapter. What advantages do the more expensive adapters have?
Lots of questions but I need to know what I'm getting into before I buy something that maybe won't suit my needs.
Thank you.

I have had an account on this website for just over a month, but this is in fact my first post.
I have ordered an adapter from twoneil and received it this weekend. It works great, and he shipped the thing out on or around the time he said he would. Hi Friend.. I'm a macmini user and I have installed on it the Final Cut Express HD 3.5, it works nice and flawlessly on the Macmini. so i just recommend you to buy the new version of Final Cut Express 4.0 its cheaper (than FCP) and very powerfull. the one and only step back is that No 24p editing is possible. But in this forum some guy one time wrote about the natress plug ins (G Film Plus), and have them installed on my mini, they are terrific. and the results are unnoticeable. The test would be to change the aperture of the 35mm prime lens and to observe how much one could stop down the lens before grain can be seen from the focusing screen.

I have a question about a lens for the adaptor. Would a f1.8 be fast enough? Like this one? http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-50mm-Nikkor-Digital-Cameras/dp/B00005LEN4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1205332274&sr=1-1
I'd like a faster one, but they are SO much more money, I'd rather have the f1.8 if the difference is marginal.

Shooting at 1.8 you will still have a very short dof.
The only real difference is probably lens quality, that is the optics of the 1.4 may be much better with larger glass so edge aberrations will be less, than a 1.8. (to this point, many dps will not shoot under f5.6 so as to eliminate edge aberrations associated due to a wide open lens)

Are there any other adapters for sale that are from a real retailer that are under $200 and good quality? Or would this one be a good buy? Just got my adapter the other day. Twoneli is amazing with his response to questions and conerns. A real professional I must say.
To those who have the adapter I have a question. Once you zoom in to get rid of any vignetting (shadows around the edges) and you have focused on a subject, are you able to now zoom in even closer and still focus. I find with the adapter I cant zoom in close anymore, that I am only able to get focus at certain zoom lengths. Is this normal? I have to get used to the upside down filming but overall the adapter is sweet.
Edgen

Is there another adapter out there that flips it automatically? Having a flipped Vertical/Horizontal would drive me nuts.
Does anyone have any 'negatives' about having the adapter? (trademark's comment on not being able to zoom, etc.)
Also, anyone in LA that would be willing to rent their adapter to me for a film shoot next weekend.

If you have zoom lenses, you can use those to zoom. See this video. (http://vimeo.com/770415)
Use the zoom on the HV20 to focus in close on the adapters screen, then use the zoom on your 35mm zoom lens to zoom in on whatever you are filming.
Results are better in good light, with a fast lens. The video was shot using a Vivitar zoom lens, max. aperture 3.5. Although shot inside, the light was good (despite the rain).

As far as I know, Twoneil recommends the 50mm 1.8 (1.4 is better but costs double) and the 85mm 1.8. AF ones are not necessary 'cause with the adapter you shoot manual focus anyway. Go to ebay and try your luck there, you might find some decent deals.

Yes, this is the vibrating adapter. it's the "Twoneil Deluxe HD"
The vibrating part helps get rid of the dust particles, but because of the vibrating lens you sacrifice a small amount of clarity and sharpness.
after handling the 35 adapter, I now know the meaning of the term, 'Check the Gate' which is the term for checking to lens to make sure no dust or hair particles are visible. otherwise, you'll have to re-shoot that scene or rotoscope the hair out of there. (which is a real bummer)

What is your email address? PM me please.
The delay is still due to the focusing screen.
I'm receiving bit by bit this month.

how does everyone carry their adapter? I will be traveling in a few months and will have my hv30 and a macbookpro in a backpack in asia and was wondering what the best case/shell would work to hold the adapter when not on the camera?

can I avoid the purchasing of a ww-adapter, if I buy the relevant nikon-lenses-aquivalent? So I guess here 30mm, or 28mm. Or did I made a logic mistake?
I tried TwoNeil's adapter with a Nikon 35mm f2.0 lens. That's a somewhat wideish lens, but once you zoom in a little to get rid of some vignetting, you're basically no better than the stock HV20 lens at full wide (43mm).
It works, but if you focus on far-away subjects (infinity focus or close to it), you get super deep depth of field (which is expected with a wideangle lens, of course). This means that your precious DOF adapter is not very useful in that scenario... basically introducing various artifacts (vignetting, chroma aberration, ground glass dust and imperfections, light loss) without adding any real benefit (shallow depth of field).
If you use the same lens to shoot close-ups, then you're OK I guess.
The adapter tends to shine more with normal (50mm) and telephoto lenses.

Just got mine last week. Love it so far...just hate this whole upside down thing havent got used to it yet...
anyway heres some sample clips. If you have a slow connection i recommend the youtube version cuz it loads much much faster (In my opinion, the youtube video looks like it has better quality):

These adapters look awesome but neil have you developed something to deal with the inverted picture? Do you sell something or make something so I wont have to use an external monitor flipped to see the image properly? I know I can flip the image in post but that can get annoying after a while.
have you developed something to deal with the inverted picture?
Much easier said than done. Look at how much the flip adapters cost for the mainstream adapters. There's a fair amount of high quality optic work involved if you want a flipped image with little light loss.
Take a look at the DIY flip hack and add a button to your camera that flips the image.

Just to say mine arrived today. Ordered April 1st, arrived May 12th.
Unfortunately I broke my camera over the weekend, and it has to go off to Canon for repair, so I won't be able to use the adaptor for at least 3 weeks :(

Even though I've been busy at work, couldn't resist to open up the package and test the adapter out. Thanks Twoneil!http://www.hv20.com/images/smilies2/hv20-smilie77.gif I will shoot something as soon as school is over. The only issue I had was trying to white balance; for some reason I couldn't do it with the adapter on, the icon kept blinking. Should I WB without the adapter first, then attach it? Other than that I really happy. Time to shoot something new!!!

You cant use it with a 35mm adapter. For wide angle, you buy a wide angle (28mm instead of 50mm) slr lens.

Hello,
This is my first post! I found this forum through an internet search which turned up some of TwoNeil's excellent work on Vimeo. Just ordered my TwoNeil adapter yesterday along with an HV30 and a Nikon 50 f1.4 from BHPhoto.com. I am planning on using this gear alongside my SONY V1-U for wedding videography. I am hoping this will help add some of the selective focus we use all the time in our wedding photography (http://www.SaintPhallePhoto.com)! Will post some footage once the shortage of parts ends and TwoNeil ships my adapter!

Yes, it is still 60days. The information is correct and updated.
Although, I might have a few (6 more orders) that will take less than 60days.
Please PM me or email me again. I'll also double check my spam mail.
Also, I will not have any stocks after all. The priority list have devoured my future potential stocks of 35mm adapters.

Yeah it seems like with a 1.2 you would focus on a person's nose and their face would look like a puddle of mud :D .

Yeah, but a 1.2 allows you to stop down a bit and get a little closer to the sweet spot of the lens which is rarely, if ever, wide open.

Yes, the Ee-A focusing screen has virtually no vignetting.
Unfortunately, it's out of stock everywhere.

So the speed affect the dof. I'm starting to get setup with a dof adaptor and i new the speed affected the light and such but i didn't realize it played such a big part in dof. of course that narrow of dof wouldn't be good if you were trying to capture a persons face.

Exactly!
The focal length is also a factor.
i.e An 85mm f1.8 has shallower depth of field than a 50mm f1.4
And lastly, the Ee-S triples the shallowness compared to the Ee-A.

I really want to order one...like now...but I have a couple of questions:
1) I will be leaving to film 7/20/08 - could I get it by that date? Ideally, it would be great to get a week before I leave so that I can mess around with it.
2) Also, can I still use a wide angle adapter and other filters with this adapter if I choose to do so?
Thanks!:hv20-smilie03:

It will work on the HV20/30 or other camcorders with a 43mm filter thread or smaller.
Unfortunately, it will not work on the DVX100B.
I don\t know if it's just me but i see vignetin in all samples.. and other ppls samples
Yes, that is normal since the adapter does not have an achromat.
Also, the focusing screen Ee-S produces vignetting while the Ee-A has virtually none.

Hey. I'm new to the whole DOF adapter world, BUT I have long time in still biz. I notice that none of the DOF adapters have what most still vets would immediately put on there, a focus arm. Why is that?
Only still photographers know about that.

Heya Niel,
Haven't got the time to thank you for your adapter, it works like a charm, I'm lovin' it ! (well, I loved it:( )
Something bad, verry bad hapened, It did fall on the ground (You guyz don't never let that happen to yours!)
Well, not so bad anyway, it's still in one piece, I try to find the good distance to put back the focusing screen, because since I tryed to put it back, I can see some lines.
If you got any advice, I'll be probably comming back on the site in a month when I'll be back from tripp, or I will realy try to check it more often. Lemme know !

Hi twoneil. I'm trying my hand at building a static adapter. Presently, I have Canon EOS extension tubes, a Canon EeS focusing screen and Daniel's corresponding focusing screen holder (SH-57EE). However, I'm having trouble determining which of Daniel's tutorials to follow in order to build a small lightweight adapter like yours.
Can you tell me what else I'll need to complete this project and how to assemble the various pieces? For instance, how and where to I position the focusing screen inside the tubes?
I assume I'll need step up rings, a EOS to Nikon adapter. Do I need an achromat?
I'll understand if you don't want to reply because you'd rather have me order an adapter from you, but any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
