I'm not interested in Blu-ray unless it becomes the only HD standard but if I was, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere about an internal Blu-ray writer for computers that was more like $500. I don't have the link but I was a little surprised when I saw that price for an computer internal one.

Me either, but it seems I'm starting to see a lot of publicity happening and in ads in the paper, flyers and on tv, most of it linked to plazma and lcd sales, so I guess the battle is underway, as Christmas is getting closer.

What I did see today (BBCworld's Click Online) was the new USB monitors, just plug 'em in and extend your desktop, wireless monitors coming as well.

I am in the process of building a new computer and was looking at different burners - will probably stick to regular old DVD for now until there is a standard. As for sub $500 Blur-Ray burners, here is one link from newegg.com: Lite-On Blue Ray Burner (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106037). I have used Lite-On for years and they have always been dependable and are significantly less expensive than brand name burners.

5 years from now we'll have dual format HD- and Blu-Ray DVD writers, burning at 20x speed, and costing £25/$50.

I'll eat a box of biscuits if I'm wrong.

I'd say you will probably be correct but I think new technology will have already outdated the dual format burners you speak of.

As for the war going on now, I have read that the Blu-Ray format is a bitch to program for and has much less abilitly to build titles, etc as compared to the HD DVD. I think that is the main drawback to Blu-Ray. Of course there are pluses and minuses on both sides. I would say the demand for writers and a standard is going to grow stronger shortly with the HDTV scene growing so rapidly. I took home a DVI projector over the weekend and couldn't believe how well it performed filling up my whole wall with video and the cost was under $700. I'm going to have to get myself one. It is really cool to watch videos in your own home, like you were at a theater.

By the way, I bought an HD DVD player about 9 months ago and have already purchased about 30 HD DVD's so I won't be dumping my HD DVD player for Blu Ray anytime soon. They do have dual players out now and if I was purchasing again, I would have to think about one of them. I have nothing against PlayStation3 but I don't think that unit is enough to cause Blu-Ray to win the war. I think Hollywood and not porn is going to decide which one wins. God help us if porn is the determining factor.

There's a Blu-ray/HD/DVD combo player drive for $300 at:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136133

They ought to be able to do burner combos.

At circuit city the internal blu-ray burner is $550.

I agree with you on this.

Edit: According to the Duke's post we are already on our way there.

My first DVD burner was $360 that I bought from Circuit City back in 2002. Luckily the thing died over a year and I got all my money back from Amex protection.

I remember paying around $500 for a 2x CDROM and audio card, back when CD drives were a novelty....That was a real good deal at the time, the kits were retailing for over $600. Of course, I also remember my first hard drive, a 5.25 form factor WD with a whopping 10MB capacity (MB, not GB). Then again, I also remember when we got the first horseless carriage in our town (kidding).

Taky,

Just a Q on the AMEX protection. I use AMEX too, But I am just wondering if I have to signup extra for this or I am covered if I buy using AMEX??

No need to sign up or do extra. However, it's better for you to call the 800 number at the back of your card to confirm. They can tell you better what's your coverage is like.
