View Full Version : Adjusting color saturation...

I am used to editing videos in Corel Video Stutio 12. I used to have a miniDV camera but last week I got Canon HV20.
I have shot few videos in 24p Cinema mode. I find the colors to be washed out, absolutely not what I was hoping them to be and not what I saw when I was shooting. Is the Cinema mode at fault here or 24p or both?
Two questions...
1. What settings to use to get vibrant colour in videos?
2. For those editing in Vegas Pro (thinking of getting it) how do you adjust for the lack of colour?
thanx

Unsharpen mask, preset "medium".

>I have shot few videos in 24p Cinema mode. I find the colors to be washed out,
This is normal. CineMode on purpose desaturates, because that's the look of the traditional films.
>absolutely not what I was hoping them to be and not what I saw when I was shooting.
It's really a matter of preference, but if you are shooting in 24p and you are looking for the "cinema movie look", then the MORE flat you can record, the BETTER it is. In fact, I would suggest you go to the Colors menu and set that to "neutral" too. More information about the cinema desaturated/low-contrast look here: http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2009/08/10/the-filmic-look-with-a-digicam/

Cinemode.
>1. What settings to use to get vibrant colour in videos?
Don't use Cinemode, and use the "Vivid" color setting.
>2. For those editing in Vegas Pro (thinking of getting it) how do you adjust for the lack of colour?
Use the Color Corrector plugin.

I don't think so.....
And CineMode gives you in fact more color than the other modes. If you use Vegas Pro.

FWIW, I edit HV30 footage using Vegas Pro 8 & 9. I usually shoot 60i, Tv, neutral colours. Recently, I started using 100% zebra and adjusting the exposure to avoid blown whites.
I use AAV Color Lab to adjust my colours. Using scopes, I adjust my black and white levels and then adjust the mid-level slider to taste. It's quite remarkable how good a well-exposed clip can turn out. A lot of my clips look washed-out or desaturated before this step.
I'm not sure what unsharp mask has to do with saturation, though. :hv20-smilie51:

What is the plug-in to use with Corel Studio Pro X3 for color correction (add some life and color to dull images). It really upsets me how I can play the raw footage on my tv via HDMI at see amazing picture quality but as soon as I get the video to my PC for processing I loose everything.

I do not know encoder inside of that Corel, but HD video downscaled to SD video (reading your next thread) needs to change color space to BT.601 from HD BT.709, maybe that is the reason, because without that video could be washed out as you describe. Also resize is the very important part of encoding also. And I doubt Corel delivers in that matter. Even more expensive programs don't also, it is one of those things everybody takes for granted but it is how it is ,and free source comes to the rescue. (Avisynth)
