View Full Version : HF S10 and Filters

Does anyone use filters on their S10? I was considering a UV, just for extra protection and possibly a polarizer but I wonder if that leads to any problems with the AF sensor or glare, not having any lens hood. Recommendations?
Regarding a lens hood... is it even necessary on the S10?

I always keep a UV filter and even stack a polarizer with no no problems. Just use multicoated glass to avoid glare.

The Canon manual shows a protect filter but it seems quite inexpensive. Is that any good or is there a better recommendation on one to use. I use B&W on my 50D but don't know if I need to go that route for the video cam. I guess it's a "you gets what you pay for" but just curious what others use.

Hoya, Tiffen, and B&W are my favorites. I have used Canon's brand before and it's not bad at all either. Tiffen usually seems to be the cheapest most of the time.

Agree. Just make sure that it's a good piece of multicoated glass.

I'm going to get a UV lens for my S100 just to keep dust/debris out of the camera. The perimeter of the lense cover is pretty open where I can see inside the electronics.

the advice on good multilayer glass is right on. I'm watching prices on the HF S100 and will replace one of my HF100's when they come down a bit, when that happens I will order a hoya SMC Super Multilayer coated UV filter for protection and some glare reduction.
Tests I ran with my HF100's showed the reduction of flare when pointed in the general direction of the sun (not necessarily directly at it) showed more effective prevention than other multicoated and single layer coated filters.
When pointed directly at the sun, nothing helps.
Sealing out dust and dirt is also another reason.
Right now both of my HF100's and all lenses for my Canon T1i have that same filter on them. A bit more cost but worth it.

Keep in mind I'm a total amateur user of my S100, not a pro, but here's what I'm using. Prices quoted are from Adorama.com
$49: Tiffen 82 mm Digital Ultra Clear Protective Glass Lens
(Rather an expensive filter to protect the $135 Raynox HD-7000 Pro 0.7x. You might consider something less expensive.)
$19: Tiffen 58mm Circular Polarizer Glass Filter, Mfr. Part: 58CP
(Great filter for shooting over water on sunny days or to pop clouds out of blue sky background, and it also works placed before the Raynox HD-7000 Pro 0.7x)
$7: Tiffen 58mm UV (Ultra Violet) Glass Filter, 58UVP
(This is a less expensive glass protection filter. It doesn't matter if your protection filter is UV or not when you are shooting digital.)
$21: Tiffen 58mm 812 Warming Glass Filter, Mfr. Part: 58812
(I bought this just for fun. It does help to warm up skin tones when shooting indoor in harsher light, but of course you must white balance BEFORE you put on the warming filter)
NOTE: I love the Adorama Plastic Snap-on Lens caps:
$4.50: 58mm Plastic Snap-On Lens Cap, Mfr. Part: B-142 SKU: LNC58
$ 7.95: 82 mm Plastic Snap-On Lens Cap,Mfr. Part: LC82 SKU: LNC82

There's a lot of good information about filters here.http://www.photofilter.com/
I just got the Hoya close up filter set. There fun to play with.

What about a lens hood? Are there any made specifically for the S10, to account for the zoom range?
What about a hood, if using one of the wide angle lens attachments?

Dude, again...please do a search. These subjects are already covered in here. New threads should be about new subjects, otherwise post to an existing related thread. You've made a career of starting new redundant threads in your short time here. We prefer members to first search before posting.

Do you have a different song? I have done searches on some of my other questions and much that comes up is 1 to 2 years old. New times, seem appropriate for new questions. I'm sure answers to the questions are different than from 2 years ago. Are you bored or something? That seems to be your only song today.
In my opinion, the only thing more annoying than someone asking a question, to which there "might" be an answer already, is someone replying "do a search" instead of just answering the question. But hey! That's just my opinion.

Most of this stuff doesn't change. What worked 2 years ago on an HV20 is just as current today on an HV40 or an HF. Photography basics and principles are written in stone. And no, I'm not bored, just tired of having to deal with arrogant newbies who come in thinking the forum has to change for them instead of them trying to fit in and follow our rules.
