View Full Version : Audio on Mini DVs

I am confused as to the operation of the audio recording on MiniDVs. Help! Can anyone tell me what is difference between Output Channel and Audio Out? and what is the difference between Stereo 1 and Stereo 2?
Can I record a mono signal through the microphone input and still get an output on both channels?
It says in the user manual that Stereo2 is the dubbed audio. If Stereo 2 is a Dubbed Channel, can I then Audio Dub on to Stereo 2?

Audio Out on the HV20 is a two channel audio line intended for playback with the video. Basically, those two channels are used for the stereo audio playback.
An output channel specifies which of the two stereo channels (or a mix) will be output on the audio out line. This is only a playback option as the HV20 does not record more than a single stereo audio signal. As some people have mentioned in other forums, this feature is to allow someone to use the HV20 as a cheap MiniDV deck.
As for the mono signal input, I'm not sure but I believe electrically it will bridge both channels and record it on both channels. If it doesn't it's pretty trivial in most video editing applications to either copy one channel to another or to alter the audio pan to play equally.

Thanks rhithyn. I guess that means that the Stereo2 tracks can only be used in AV dub mode and are not usable in live recording mode.

As far as I understand it, yes. It would be nice, but with everything else that's right with the HV20, I can live with it ;)
