Capture To Laptop Via HDMI?...

For those of you who might be interested in the capture of high quality video bypassing the hdv compression:

The HDMI port on HV20 allows for direct capture of uncompressed video to a (very fast) desktop using the Blackmagic (http://www.blackmagic-design.com) Intensity board.

But what about laptops? There is no such solution for laptops, unless you use some tweaking.

If you have a laptop with an Expresscard slot, and an Intensity board, you can probably use this product (http://www.getcatalyst.com/adapter_moreInfo_pcie2exp.html) to connect a PCI express card like Intensity to a laptop Expresscard slot.

Also note that I have not tried it myself but I think it should work.

I hope someone tries it. Until we can record HDMI to a laptop, I'm not sure that the HDMI aspect of the HV20 is worth getting excited about. As soon as we CAN record (nearly) uncompressed footage via HDMI to a laptop, then I'm very, very happy.

Only i want to know if the Black magic intensity card can do downconvert , hvd to dv when we are capturing , so we can work better in dv with less effort in the cpu. or there is another way to capture the hdv footage to dv directly in a program as Vegas 7 or premier pro?
be cause editing in hdv( i have vegas 7) it looks slow and whit image Jumps.

All you need to do is output the video as DV LOCKED!

-> Go into Playback mode, and into the Menu.

From there, go down twice -- it'll say "PLAY/OUT SETUP2" at the top. Go into there and it'll be the bottom option, "DV OUTPUT." Change it to "DV LOCKED."

Voila!

This will output your HDV footage as DV to your computer. It will retain the original HDV on the tape, but output it as DV (for now) for you to edit until you get a better computer or whatever. Enjoy!

I think the biggest problem with this is going to be the hardisks, as most hardisks in laptops dont even spin at 7200rpm there in the 5000 and somthin area.

What about FW800? I'm thinking of this workflow:

HV20 -> Intensity (with getCatalyst adaptor) -> cineform neoHD -> macbook pro -> Iomega Ultramax FW800 (which has 2 raid-0 drives).

Also, I'm thinking the same workflow for Windows/Premiere Pro with ProspectHD.

So, do you think it could work?

I think having a macbook in your set would be perfect because of almost zero noise. And on-the-go, you could use a battery pack with the getCatalyst and have an almost portable solution.
Ok, I think I'll have to ask Cineform guys.

By the way, I can't try it cause I still don't have neither hv20 nor macbook (nor Intensity, nor getCatalyst...) :D

If anyone gets this working reliably, I would love to know. I have the budget, I have the equipment (either here or sourced), but I don't have the time or the money to deal with a problem. If the desktop PCI-e card can't get enough power from the mobile slot, and it blows a 350 dollar board and a 250 dollar adapter, I'm screwed. If someone else wants to run this solution (Intensity through catalyst), I'll gladly help them. Otherwise, I may just order a Magma (expensive but worth it, I have a battery pack that'll push the voltage it needs, so mobile station here I come!).

Too impatient to wait for this (http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?t=3672)? Working prototype should be at NAB mid-April, price to be "under $2000." If that appeals to you, I recommend (politely) bugging our own David Newman (http://www.hv20.com/member.php?u=3717) of CineForm, on the assumption that the more interest they see in the product the faster and cheaper they'll bring it to market!
