Just bought the HV40 and I'm in the process of learning. I shoot lots of photos so I know some.

1- How does "steady shot" work? does it hurt the quality at all? if not, are there times I shouldn't use it?

2- My friend told me not to record onto tapes that I've already recorded onto once. It's bad for the camera. Is this true?

3- A different friend has an older camera and has an old handicam to watch footage and capture off of because it's bad for the heads to watch on the camera.. is this something I need to worry about?

4- Just read something on this forum on how to control both aperture and shutter together but it didn't explain at all. He mentioned manipulating the photo setting or something... Does anybody know how to control the aperture AND the shutter?

5- What is cinimatic mode? the booklet doesnt really explain at all. What does it actually do to the quality and the footage? when should it be used and when should it not be used?

6- Saw a focus wheel for the hv40 here: http://www.irvdesign.com/product/mfr/
does anybody know how to make this? is there a diy version out there somewhere? because it's out of stock and it seems like it could be made easily if you know what to look for.

Thanks so much in advance for any help!!!

Welcome to the forum.

Not sure if you mean turning on the Optical Image Stablization (OIS) on/off. That reduce some of your hand shakes. Turn if off if you mount it on tripod. The manual mentioned that.

2- My friend told me not to record onto tapes that I've already recorded onto once. It's bad for the camera. Is this true?

HV40 is a tape based camera. You need new friends.

3- A different friend has an older camera and has an old handicam to watch footage and capture off of because it's bad for the heads to watch on the camera.. is this something I need to worry about?

You can buy an old HV20 for that purpose. My HV30 is my playback deck for my XH-A1. But your HV40 is meant to be used for the purpose of playing back footage. Unless you have to playback lots of tapes like me, you need new friends.

4- Just read something on this forum on how to control both aperture and shutter together but it didn't explain at all. He mentioned manipulating the photo setting or something... Does anybody know how to control the aperture AND the shutter?

You can control the shutter with the Tv mode. You can control the aperture with the Av mode. You can't control both at the same time (manual mode). Read the manual and read the forum stickies.

5- What is cinimatic mode? the booklet doesnt really explain at all. What does it actually do to the quality and the footage? when should it be used and when should it not be used?

There is Cine Mode and Cinema Mode. I don't know there is a cinimatic mode. Cinema Mode is 24P (frame rate). Cine mode is a shoot mode with a combination of controlled aperture, shutter speed and color curves. Play with each of them and you will see.

We also advice you to read the FAQ as well as the stckies under each subforum. Many things has been discussed.

Thanks for comments and attitude, if anybody has answers, that would be more helpful. I think you may have read some of my questions wrong. I am just learning and not planning on making a career out of it. I just want to make some great looking videos and know what I'm doing. That's why I got the hv40. Not about to run out and drop mine and my family's life savings on a Red or something. I know the hv40 records on tapes. and you didn't answer my question about recording over old footage.

Also, I know what the image stabilization does, the question was for how it works... like does it use a motor to stabilize? There's editing software that crops your frame where it needs to in order to line up each frame to make a the shot smooth ... that came to mind when I saw the feature and I wanted to make sure something like that is not happening and hurting the quality.

You will have an abysmal or short-lived future on hv20.com with YOUR attitude me thinks.

Unwelcome to the forum!
