I wanted an HFS100 but went with the HF100 and hope I do not regret it. Nevertheless, I need to go ahead and get a SDHC card for it. Can someone make an inexpensive suggestion for me. I see some on ebay for under $40 but I really don't know what I am looking for...
I was going to go with a 16GB or 32GB and know to look for Class 6, but is there a particular brand you would suggest or a particular place to buy from that is solid?
thanks guys

I've used Kingston, A-Data, PNY and Sandisk class 4 & 6's in my HF100. Even the class 4's work just fine in 17Mbps FXP mode.

$499 for the HF100 is a good deal, even refurbished. Don't worry, the HF100 is a highly praised camcorder.
Remember to back up your files to more than spot; don't just leave them on one hard drive. Make data DVD backups and/or copy to an external HDD.
As far as getting a card(s), try and find a name brand SDHC card on sale: many 4th of July sales this weekend.

Sometimes I regret getting the HV30 instead of the HF100 because of the speed and ease of getting footage from it but knowing the risks of keeping data on hard drives and having to have more than one backup..etc i'm glad that i did go with the HV because of the archival/backup ease of DV tapes.
jrod81 - Enjoy your HF100 I'm sure you'll be more than happy with it! But like net says make sure to have more than one backup of footage to be safe.

I have a pair of HF100's and they work well for me. I shop amazon.com for bargains on Class (6) Sandisk 8GB cards. Here is what they have today, note the "Frequently Bought Together" offer. You will need one of those readers because most SD slots on computers won't read SDHC.

If you have a Sams Club near you, I bought a Toshiba 16-gb SDHC card for $29.99 each. They are only Class-4; but on my HFS100 they work perfectly in the MXP mode.

While these will work in the HF100 they may not work in other gear as well. The new Canon T1i is a good case in point. One guy found out Kingston Class (6) cards did NOT keep up with the camera in video mode. The buffer bar appeared and when the buffer filled up, record mode shut down and he lost video.
Canon advised SanDisk Extreme III Class (6) and when he tried one his problem "went away".
OK. So you say, "we're talking HF100 here".
Fine.
Then some months down the road the price on the T1i drops a few hundred. The guy who already has SanDisk Extreme III Class (6) cards is ready with media he can use in both cams.
I didn't wait for the price drop, sold some gear to raise the current price and have found the T1i footage edits in with HF100 footage nicely.
If he can find some at the price level I did, he may be best off going for it.

8GB cards are supposed to be good for about an hour of recording at the HF100's top resolution. I stop at 75% or 80% to keep from filling it up. Just like hard drives, it is in the last 15% of media capacity where the file allocation table is most susceptible to corruption and media "disaster".
So basically I stop at 45 minutes or so. Suits my style of video as I do fairly short scenes or takes. Running the same scene for 20-30 minutes gets real boring for viewers and I edit for a fairly quick pace anyway.

I have two Transcend 16gb SDHC from Newegg and have used them extensively with no probs.
The HF100 is a truly great cam, I have that, the HF10 and the HV20. My favorite is the HF10--ever so slightly better blacks and slightly less moiree. Very sharp picture on both the HF10 and the HF100.
You can grab a long life battery as well--I got a 3100mah on eBay for $20.
You can take a picture while shooting video--but you have to change the picture format first to the video size--it isn't what I would call crystal clear in the manual. Make sure to push the button past the first click, or use the remote--don't accidentally hit the stop button on the remote :)
Take a few seconds to process the picture but it works and is very handy.

It looks like you have to put the smaller card into the bigger adapter every time.
Get a couple of these; they are better and cheaper - no adapters.
Amazon.com: Transcend 8 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card TS8GSDHC6: Electronics
Or one with a reader if you need it:
Amazon.com: Transcend 8 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card with Card Reader TS8GSDHC6-S5W: Electronics
I would say get a better brand, as Bif suggested - but at least avoid the ones with adapters.

so is the reader just so you don't have to use the camera as a deck? that is a nice feature but if that is all it is for i could probably save some money and pass... is there any other use for the reader???

Alright seriously, I have to make a decision if I am going to get this card in time to take it on the road trip with me. I am going to get one of these two, are they both okay choices? Am I missing anything at all, will either work just fine with the HF100:
Amazon.com: Transcend 16 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card TS16GSDHC6: Electronics
or

If you want to be able to just take the card out and put it in your pc (files will be in "Stream" folder - copy and paste to pc hard drive) ...then you would use a reader.
Maybe you already have one on your pc that reads SDHC(?)
Otherwise, you have to use USB/ and the Pixela software with the camcorder connected while it's plugged into the power adapter.
Or bypass the Pixela software and copy and paste files from Stream folder to pc hard drive (while connected USB) and then open up files in and editor that can read mts files.
If you don't mind the USB connection with power adapter - then the reader isn't necessary -but convenient.
Those 16gb Transcend cards are fine- but if you get (2) 8 gig - about the same price for 2..if something happens to one - at least you have a second as a backup.
Relying on just one card is probably not a good idea.

i was gonna buy an 8gb and a 16gb with reader but feared that the reader might only work with the corresponding gb amount so i just went with a 8gb w/ reader and then an additional 8gb... hope that is enough for me... i don't want to be offloading every night in a hotel...
