I thought I'd try fooling around with the .mp4 export settings to get good video quality with a smooth playback after seeing the Fruit .mp4 video of the red pepper and orange orange posted here in this forum.

I have a strong desktop computer but .mp4 still stutters annoyingly but that Fruit .mp4 video looked great and played smoothly.

After about five attempts at changing the bitrate and keyframes settings I got something that looked pretty good and played smoothly with a small file size. I just might be convinced to export all of my videos in .mp4 format and perhaps other formats once I get their workflows perfected.

Here is what I found: It seems that in Premiere Pro CS3 I can only export to 24/23.976 fps in H.264 and to get 24p I must export in HDTV 1920 x 1080p @ 24fps.

I achieved good if not excellent quality with smooth playback and small file size with the following settings:

I used everything default except I used a keyframe setting of 4, a target bitrate of 8 and a maximum bitrate of 10 to export .mp4.

I had my HV20 for only three days when I set it on a tripod at a busy street intersection and shot some 24p footage. The lighting situation was complicated with shadow in the middle and a white building in the background on a sunny late afternoon.

I had zebra 100% on so I had to go into manual exposure lock with shutter priority and began with an exposure setting of -4 to get the zebras off the background building. But then a white bus pulls up and I go to -7 exposure.

I think this clip of 24p exported to .mp4 looks pretty good considering I was bumping the camera around and the difficult lighting situation and the diffucult auto focus situation.

But what is important is the fact that by adjusting the .mp4 export settings you can get a good quality video that runs smooth and has a relatively small file size.

Take a look.

I looked at your video and it did look good. What are your capture settings in PPCS3?
Thanks,
Paul

I would encourage you to use .mp4, as people with xbox360 and PS3s can then playback these files on the HDTVs, while the .mov container is not supported by these devices (even if the internal h.264 format is the same).
