Hi,

Just wondering if there are dual-standard (NTSC/PAL) models of the HV30/40 (and/or the HF-S10/100) available or whether Canon offer a firmware upgrade for conversion to dual-standard, as they do for the XH-A1?

Cheers.

No there aren't. No, they don't... But keep an eye out on the progress of the firmware hack. One of the things that's on the list of finding out there is if PAL/NTSC is a firmware or hardware thing. ;)

The reason I asked is that I had come across this HV30 on EBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=370215032351

I inquired with the seller whether this is truly a 'dual-standard' model i.e. capable of recording at 60Hz (60i, 30p, 24p) and 50Hz (50i, 25p), or whether the 'world-wide' PAL/NTSC compatibility simply means that it is capable of output to both NTSC and PAL display systems. The answer I just got back is:

"Sorry about the confusion. This is an US NTSC model and totally compatible for use in Canada".

Hmmm...this still leaves me a bit confused...are'nt all NTSC models compatible with NTSC video systems throughout North America? Quite obviously though, this is not a 'dual-standard' model in terms of recording options, which was my primary interest.

Just a word about the firmware hack, I'm pretty sure that the hack wont make region switching possible. Could be wrong, but I remember reading the cameras having a bit different hardware.

But no, a camera is either NTSC or PAL-never both.
