Is the DM-100 external microphone needed for the HFS cameras? When i was using my sony miniDV camera i had to get an external microphone to 'decrease' the motor whine. But with the HFS being tapeless and motorless surely there less need of an external microphone.

I do see one need though for the DM-100 - on a windy day a sock can be put over it to avoid the noise the wind makes.

Any comments or suggestions about the DM-100 or its usefullness?

The background noise is high, whether it is windy or indoors. I am looking for the DM-100.

an external mic is a must for the hf s10/100. the dm-100 is a good mic for the camera, and performs really well. the onboard mics are horrible at picking up any and every sound anywhere near, behind, under or around the camera. i wonder who ever thought sticking mics on the side of the camera was a smart idea.

if you want to use the new mini shoe, the dm-100 is your choice, or you could go with a rode mic if you get the adapter, but i've found the canon mic to perform really well in almost every environment.
