- you can ftp to hv20.info; the folder will automatically be chosen for you, just use "hv20.info" (without quotation marks) as the location
- use "anonymous" as login and password; without quotation marks of course
- max file size is 250MB per file
- NO COPYRIGHTED MUSIC PLEASE; do NOT use copyrighted music for your clip; it's not allowed unless you have permission by the author & the label
- please only upload HV20 related material; I'll keep an eye out for unrelated items and remove them
- let me know it there's a problem
- use a free ftp program to upload, such as FileZilla on the PC: http://www.download.com/FileZilla/3000-2160_4-10634986.html?tag=lst-3-7
- you need to link to your file like this: http://hv20.info/yopu/yourfilename.extention (example: http://hv20.info/yopu/hello.gif )

Not a bozo-able offense, just a small directory error! :)

Don't try and FTP to the YOPU directory, just use HV20.INFO, it will go to the yopu directory by itself.
Just checked it here, and it works fine...

Yes, I believe I disallowed directory changes. Just ftp to HV20.INFO.
It should look something like this (depending on your FTP program):

HOST NAME/ ADDRESS: hv20.info not hv20.info/ or hv20.info/yopu
USER ID: anonymous
PASSWORD: anonymous
HOST TYPE: UNIX (standard)

BarnOwl,
I am not sure why this is causing you a problem. I now downloaded and installed FTP Voyager and it works flawlessly here. This makes three different FTP programs this works on here.

I get the EXACT same progress wording as you, incl. the ERRORS, but it resumes within a split second like this:

"FTP Voyager - Version 14.1.0.0"

COMMAND:> PWD
257 "/" is current directory.
COMMAND:> TYPE A

Ok, I just uploaded a test file. It is "rain.wmv" made by Solomon Chase (DVinfo.net) and it uploads just fine. If you want, you can delete it, but I think this is the best short clip made with the HV20 I've seen so far, just awesome! http://hv20.info/yopu/rain.wmv
Anyway, I thought I would be able to download the files in the FTP directory too, but how is that?
I only see the file I just uploaded, where are the clips?

So, how come it's suddenly working now? Did you change anything?

As far as directory is concerned; the whole directory should be viewable, with all the files in it. Again, not sure why that is not working for you.

BarnOwl

I just didn't upload anything because I saw the error files. After your post just to ignore the errors upload worked, bit confusing though......
And I still don't see anything in the directory. After a refresh even the file I uploaded became invisible.

Man I'm connecting but I am still getting a 550:Permission denied. I can upload to my own website's sever but not this one for some reason. I am using Cyberduck on OSX.

Mal
2007 May 17th, 17:45
Not sure how to resolve these issues.

I've tried it with three different FTP clients on two computers, and it works fine here. there's plenty of files uploaded, so for some reason there's some remnant issues left lingering around that don't effect everyone. Sorry 'bout that.

On the PC, maybe download the free FILEZILLA, on the Mac maybe try FETCH (free for 15 days).

I had the same problems with Cyberduck that neocastillo had.
I am able to login, see files and upload using Terminal in OSX, however.
Terminal is not for the faint of heart, but here's a quick ftp lesson:
1) navigate to the folder where the file you want to upload is located (if you can't do this, you probably don't want to be messing around in Terminal)
2) type:
ftp
you'll enter ftp mode and see this:
ftp>
3) now type:
open hv20.info
4) enter anonymous as user name and password and you should get in
5) type:
put "name of file"
it will upload, and give you feedback as to how long and progress
6) when done, type:
close
then type:
exit

Just as an aside - I pretty much am sick of ftp. I'm a computer tech and it is one of the most troublesome protocols out there.

I have a better way to login to the FTP site without using command prompt or any FTP client.

Create a favorite with this URL in your IE

ftp://hv20.info

Now use your Windows Explorer (notice, not Internet Explorer but Windows Explorer. Actually IE6 will work too but not IE7), and go to this address through the Favorite menu. You are now able to drag and drop files to that window without using any FTP client.

It seems that the problems comes from the fact that most FTP clients will automatically do a CWD "/" upon connecting. And in a previous post, you mentioned that you don't allow changing directories. A better implementation would be to only allow access to "/". People can't try and CWD, but they just wouldn't be able to get anywhere.

I tried Cyberduck FTP and Firefox and get the same results. There isn't a directory called "/". Filezilla on Windows does work, but only because it doesn't do the CWD "/".

I just tried again using Windows Explorer. It gave me an error too. Right after the error, I clicked "File, Login As", check "Log On Anonymously" then Log On. Boom, I'm in using Windows Explorer.

Thanks Mal. However, could you please remove BOTH the zoo.mp4 and Zoo.mp4 from the server? I tried twice to upload but my connection got severed both times, and I can't delete these files which take space there for no reason now. I will retry to upload a smaller version instead (45 MBs instead of 240).

The files are:

CapDVHS Test.avi

PE3 Test.avi

Using filezilla and everything works perfectly for me. I'm even NATTed and behind a firewall.

I think the real problems most people have with this "troublesome protocol" are more related to network issues than the transfer method itself. Are the people who are having problems aware if they are behind a NAT or proxy server? Sometimes even when you think you have a direct net connection (through your ISP) you are actually behind proxies or even being NATTED and/or firewalled.

If you use "PASSIVE" mode that usually does the trick with NATs.

NO COPYRIGHTED MUSIC PLEASE;

I have made a video of an oldtimer show. I did not add music but the PA system was playing lots of music all the time and obviously this is now in the video. Is that allowable? They played loud and some music got on tape in pretty decent (though mono) quality.

Eugenia Loli-Queru
2007 September 19th, 16:45
I am afraid that fair use does not allow consumers to use parts of copyrighted A/V that doesn't adhere to the following rules:
1. Parody
2. Journalism
3. Education

If your video is simply a fan video used without authorization, then I am afraid it's not legal -- even if the creator of the show might not mind.

w.pasman
2007 September 20th, 03:09
That sounds complex enough to start a whole new forum thread about....

The show was on public area, not a restricted or pay-for event. There were no restrictions on photo/filming. There are plenty of still photos online of this event and no one ever seemed to be bothered about copyright issues there?

I shot the material myself, I did not use any material from third parties.

What exactly are you referring to with parody, journalism and education?

What do you mean with "fan film *used* without authorization" ?

Eugenia Loli-Queru
2007 September 20th, 05:12
Ah, ok, I thought you meant a TV show. :P

I guess it's ok to post a public performance, the only question is, if the songs performed where licensed by these performing artists to be allowed to be viewed on video...

Logging in seems to work, although not very smoothly. The first time, "dir" command seemed to do nothing, but the second time it worked.

But the upload stops immediately

I normally get disconnected when the upload reaches about 10MBs - 14MBs and usually just click QuickConnect with FileZilla. It used to reconnect and the file would resume uploading automatically.

But not now. It says that the file already exists. I try to resume the upload but it won't let me do it. I try to delete the partially uploaded file and it won't let me do it. It only lets me upload and terminates my upload anywhere from 10MBs - 14MBs.

I may just have to stop uploading. Bummer.

OK Here is the concept I came up with. hehe...but you have to watch the video first The website doesn't function yet - I'm gonna need to think that one through more thoroughly. I actually would love to allow creating a community include having the community host the file on their server and provide the ftp details when they setup with me. That would be sweet. Just an idea..gtg work.

FTP is good. Fewer / smaller headers, so more throughput. aka higher bandwidth for data, rather than protocols. But it can be troublesome. Given that movies are binary data and not ascii data.

Many clients/servers default to ascii mode, which is meant for text files. Since various platforms store them in different ways. Even the one built into windows defaults to ascii. Which you can get to from an MS-DOS prompt. ftp -i [IP || URL]. Not sure on the -i part, I think it was needed if uploading / downloading multiple files(mget/mput) with a wildcard and didn't want to answer confirm after each one.

Once connected to the ftp site in the client, help will list what commands are available. In case you're like me and can't remember them, or can't remember how to spell them. Most notably connect, login, binary, put, disconnect, quit. Which should be all you need. In case you wanted to upload from work, and weren't able/allowed to install "new" software.

Beyond that gftp in linux works great. I used to use wsftp or cuteftp back in college in windows, way back when. But you don't need those as most OS's have ftp built into the command line utilities.
