I have since figured out the solution - please see the following thread:
http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?t=243

OK,

I followed various suggestions here and on other boards about importing into FCP, then using JES to get rid of pulldown, then bringing it back to FCP.
I've done everything, and I still have to render in the timeline in FCP. And after I render, if I do anything, I have to render again.
I've checked my Sequence settings against the clip settings, and it appears OK. I've also reimported using different settings and tried various combos of importing, using JES and sequence settings in FCP. For a couple hours now.

What I'm looking for is a step-by-step from importing off the HV20 into FCP (what settings to use), using JES (what settings) and then back in FCP what sequence settings to use.

Anyone have anything to offer in that vein?

I'd really, really appreciate it!

Thanks

Change your sequencw settings to match the format you exproted from JES. For instance if you exported to MOTION-JPEG then make sure that that is the codec you are using for your sequence. My gues is that your squence is using HDV or AIC. You might need to change the audio codec as well, but that is doubtful.

Thanks for the thought, but I've already checked all that.
Everything is the same. That's what is mystifying me.

If you could open your exproted clip up in quicktime and go under the "window" menu and take a screen shot of that for me. Then right click on the sequence you are using is FCP and take a screen shot of the settings for that sequence so I can see what exactly is going. It will help me to better diagnose the problem.

I appreciate you taking the time. Good idea to use screenshots!

Here are 3 screenshots: the first is freshly imported off the camera into FCP (imported.jpg)
the second is after I've used JES and then brought back into FCP (afterJES.jpg)
the third is the sequence (sequence.jpg)

I hope I'm just missing something, and that you can see it.

Thanks!

Do you think it could have something to do with the amount of compression being applied by JES? For instance your sequence clip is set to 75% Photo-Jpeg, what if the file oyu made is set to 100%? I know with JES there is no real way to see what the compression is when direct outputting. My guess is that the commpress settings in your sequence might be off.

perhaps changing the sequence aspect ratio to CUSTOM instead of the HDTV 1080i interlaced preset would do it
