Being that Phillip Bloom is God in Cinematographer form he has got his hands on the new JVC shoulder mount cam and did a review for it (some actual video from the cam is included). Heres the link to his review on vimeo: Review of JVC GY-HM 700 on Vimeo

And here's a graded video that he did with the footage: Battersea: JVC GY-HM 700 on Vimeo

I must say i'm very impressed by this camera even though the technical aspects didn't sound that great at first. The DOF he achieved with the fujinon lens was amazing. Anyhow figured i'd share in case some of you hadn't seen it.

(Does anyone know if Philip Bloom buys all of these cameras or does he rent them or something? That's be an ungodly amount of money if he bought each and every one.)

Heh, I wouldn't call him a Cinematographer God. He just knows his stuff better than most and has access to gear.

Ha! yeah sticking a camera in a public place and shooting highcrank videos, not really the definition of high-end cinematography.. If Bloom is god, who is Roger Deakins or Lance Acord, or to a lesser extend, Rich Lee? Common spider..reach higher.

Just making a joke, he's just got a lot more talent than most with using all the new digital cams. My actual favorites are Matthew Libatique (Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, Iron Man) and Janusz Kaminski (Saving Private Ryan, The Diving Bell and The Butterfly, Schindlers List.) The fountain is one of my favorite movies overall and it's cinematography is incredible and The Diving Bell and The Butterfly was just amazingly well done and inventive.

Edit: Roger Deakins is amazing too. I actually haven't seen any of the movies Lance Acord has done, i need to though, but who is Rich Lee?

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was just... beautiful. Absolutely breathtaking.

I knew there was some taste in you. :p

PB is obsessed with shallow DOF, but I think that his shallow DOF is too shallow.

I know what you mean it can be too much at times. I posted this really because the video quality of the JVC looks really good. I wish this cam sold for sub $5000 and not $8000. but i guess maybe that's asking a bit?

Either way I couldn't afford it, i'm just love dreaming of owning something pro-ish.

The stuff they did like sewing the eye up just made me cringe, but it looked so real. It was incredible.

I like bloom's stuff, but like others say it's not the greatest out there. He's definitely really good when it comes to reviewing prosumer level camcorders.

negatives I noticed:
purple fringing on some of the highlights- probably why he suggests going with the canon lens over the fujinon.
No mp4 recording on the camera unless you buy sxs accessory(even for recording mp4 on sdhc)- does this mean no native quicktime without this optional and price-increasing accessory? Big no-no for me, since the little brother, the 1/4" hm-100 is sdhc only and records to quicktime.

Ok, that is some nice stuff...I wish we could see this down in the consumer range, but I guess I will need to wait 5+ yrs for that. In the meantime, I am positive the HV20 can get something 'similar' to that footage, it just takes way more effort with the original lighting and grading and post options.

From JVC's website:

Native file recording—world's fastest shoot-to-edit workflow.

* Native Final Cut Pro format
Edit immediately without conversion or transcoding
* .MP4 file format
Available with optional SxS Media Recorder

Whats the native final cut format? i thought it was quicktime which is .mp4 isn't it?
