Hi,
I'm trying to find out how to get a fluent transition of a HD-clip to gradually become black&white.
Thanks for your help

Hi, this was advice given to me for FCP. I wanted to desaturate over multiple clips. I am not sure if it applies to FCE:
Nest the clips and then apply to the nest. After you nest and apply, adjust by selecting the nest and hitting ENTER on your numeric keypad... not RETURN to send to the viewer without opening the nest.
If not, then you could search here:

not familiar with FCE, only FCP, but you could split the clip with the blade tool, apply a desaturation/B&W filter to the second half of the clip, then add a cross dissolve transition at the split point and extend it out as long as you want the effect to take place.

That's exactly how I've done in in FCE. Works great

...or you could make a copy of the clip and place it above the clip you're dissolving out of. Make the copy black and white and dissolve it in with the pen tool.
BTW, If the second clip was blurred you can dissolve it out and it looks like a focus pull... very effective.
Best of luck with it.
