Hi!

I've had my HV20 a while - I was real excited to get it as we manufacture IPTV kit and HD footage can be sparse. Figured we could film some of our own footage.

Anyway - the footage is nice, some 50i and some 25p (PAL). But, when I import it in FCP(5), it looks OK until I export the movie. I get serious interlace issues (I think). Any movement looks horrid, and when I pause it you can see distinct lines, almost like two frames overlayed!

I know my encoding, but I've never had a video camera, and whilst I've done loads of editing of stuff in FCP(5) and FCE HD, I've never done anything with a camera. I truly am an amateur cameraman, but don't tell anyone.

Not sure if this helps.
I recently got my hv20. Used both imovie and FCE to capture footage. But whatever format I exported to (H.264 MPEG-4, .MOV, etc), i found something similar i.e. for any moving objects I noticed some lines. Played around with the export bit rates to no avail.

I tried sony vegas instead (on my PC). And boy, is the footage clear.
I am thinking I may have no choice but to go back to my PC for video editing. To be honest, after using the mac for the last few years for editing, i found vegas to be not very intuitive. But after playing with it for a few hours, i am getting a hang of it.

BTW, I have been playing my clips off the PS3. Vegas captures the clips as .m2t files which can be played natively by PS3 without any conversion. Which is a great plus.
To accomplish the same with the mac I'd need to export the clips captured by the mac apps (encoded using apple intermediate codec) to h.264 mpeg-4 which sadly is not upto snuff :(

Hope this helps

Not really, I've always had the same problem, with the lines. I edit on Final Cut Pro 5, and I'm not converting to PC any time soon for my editing, I'd also like to find a fix for this problem. There must be some way.

I find it VERY intuitive. It's my favorite program, in general :hv20-smilie77:

Naw =P

I was wondering if anyone experienced with Final Cut Pro 5 knows how to fix the problem.

You need to do the pulldown with JES.

How??

I have seen posts about the pulldown. I understand the 3:2 pulldown stuff but what I don't understand is why it has to be done.

The HV20 captures 25P, so why is the material not imported as such? It seems like a realy hastle to have to do this - I'd feel happier about it if I had at least a small technical understanding. It would be great if someone could take a little time to explain it to me (us?).

Am I right in thinking because I have the PAL HV20 that I don't need to go through the whole process of deinterlace. The import into iMovie auto detects 1080i-25, so I would imaging exporting through H264 (QT) and selecting de-interlace would give me 25P?

HV 20 captures frames with progressive scan, but it records in interlaced mode 1080 50i ! only pro camcorders records on tape using real progressive : each picture is full-frame defined on tape.

so far I've experienced HV20 footage after editing (few weeks ;) ), I did not see any line or field-like images since I did not change the speed of the footage. Once I changed speed and size, there it goes, the trick is revealed. There I found necessary to use a frame filter to blend fields. I guess another solution would be to blend fields prior to editing (said before on this post), or you can try to set a sequence template that acts as 108025p, no field priority. (I did not tested this one)

[edit] in 25p, there is no need of pulldown removal, only 60i 24p (http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?t=190&highlight=24p+final+cut+pro) requires it. 50i and 25p don't need any add of frame.
