View Full Version : Storage: Firewire or Gigabit Ethernet?

I am going to be getting into a little video editing with my MacBook.

I need to get an external drive to store all of the data. The MacBook has a FireWire 400 connection and a Gigabit Ethernet port.

Prices on External FW400 drives aren't too differnet than some of Lacie's Gigabit Networked Attached drives. I have a Gigabit Router that I could wire it all up with no problem.

At first glance it seems 1000Mbps is better than 400Mbps. Any reason FireWire would be better than Gigabit? Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Thanks!!

Err why not FW800?

NVM thought ya had a MBP. Gigabit is overkill for DV or HDV editing. FW is fine, unless you have your FW HD and FW Cam plugged in at the same time. You can daisy chain if you like, I tend not to. A LaCie USB 2 HardDrive has plenty throughput for DV or HDV editing.

he said his macBook has a firewire 400 connection.

I think for the gigabite NAS to work, it has to connect to a gitibite router first.

Firewire is generally going to be more reliable in terms of bandwidth than a networked drive, and really if you're just adding a single drive, most drives can't max out 400mbps, never mind gigabit.
