Just trying out something new. :hv20-smilie03:

Any suggestions on how long this should be run for? I was thinking till January 10, but that might be too short.
The winner will receive the honor of winning the first Unofficial HD short contest.... and a thumbs up :hv20-smilie77:
MORE INFO OF CONTEST WILL COME SOON

Just a little update: There actually might be a very good prize for this thing, depending on how things play out.
HOW TO ENTER: Post a reply with you full name and a link to your movie (Vimeo is preferred).
On the deadline I'll gather up all the info and then hope that a moderator is nice enough ( :) ) to create a poll for the final vote.

I'm all for it and I know you want to get the contest going, but there should be a theme... lol
Henry701
2008 December 30th, 22:34
I wanted to be as general as possible for the first one, just to get many people started on it.
But maybe no theme is a little to far...
How about it has to be between 30sec. - 10 min. :hv20-smilie77: :hv20-smilie15:

maybe beer should be the theme, a youtube or website link will work for people to view the film, yeah??

You could always upload as a QUICKTIME file to hv20.info,
and post the films url here in a thread between the [ qt ] and [ / qt ] (without spaces) tags.
That way there's no leaving this site, and the full upload quality can be viewed.
Instructions for uploading to hv20.info:

Beer isn't age appropriate. Something else?

2008 December 31st, 18:23
How about the theme could be a feeling? Like fear, or suspense or something. Keep in mind I've proven myself an idiot on several occasions.
Just nothing lame.
Like discovery or something! Example; A point of the short has to be based on a discovery being made. Kids find their grandpa's old WW2 something or other and it turns out he's really Hitler or something. Then Tom Cruise comes in and tries to kill him or something. Maybe Adam Sandler could, you know... Be like, a boxer or something?

Since its new year, what dose everyone think about "New years Resolution" as a theme. That defiantly applies to beer, but could also be about feelings and stuff.
I like your idea Loveless.

I really like the no themes contest! I really think people should have 6 weeks to 8 weeks though.
No theme contest allows people to use prior things they have shot on hv20 and I think that will give us much better competition and more great films to watch.

I personally find that using prior work sorta defeats the purpose of short short film contests.
And I've already begun production today on a beer related short; though I could tweak the conclusion to be fear/ suspense.
So, with all said, if the theme is changed my vote is for suspense.

Can the short have copyrighted music that doesn't belong to the filmmaker? Just curious.

2009 January 2nd, 10:38
Alright, I'm thinking that I should keep this no theme contest up, since there is a couple that look like they've already started. Run this for a couple weeks, maybe till the end of the month, so that on February we can actually start a contest with a theme (?and prize?). If everyone is cool with that.
And thanks penguin, I'm gonna be needing that help.

Is it okay if it's in SD? The plan was to use my friends XL2 as main camera and we ended up downscaling the HD footage already. Well it turns out we never used the XL2, and soley shot on HV30.
Also could we get a more precise date? We got a lot of work to do and need to know what our deadline is. Thanks

"No theme" is alright - but to not compare apples to oranges it would be important to have a fixed length. 90 seconds VS 30 minutes is not really comparable, is it? Well, maybe next time. ;)
Can the short have copyrighted music that doesn't belong to the filmmaker? Just curious.
My opinion is that it is unfair to allow the use of copyright music and also not really helping the filmmaker to become better.
Unfair and illegal. No copyrighted music!

Yea, it's alright if it's SD, but it better be good. ;)

Just like everyone else said. That is never a good idea.

It's only illegal if you use it to make money, which is why you couldn't have any cash prizes.

THAT is not true at all.
In fact, it is SO untrue, I almost deleted your post.
Using copyrighted material without permission is illegal, whether you make money from it or not.

A contest now on YouTube called Project: Direct asks:
Direct an original short incorporating Moviefone's red phone and 2 other props that represent the most memorable films from the first 25 years of the Sundance Film Festival, and you could get the exposure you need to turn your craft into a career.
http://www.youtube.com/projectdirect
Maybe you can do something like that; have elements/objects that are required to be in each one...
Anyway, they're down to the 10 finalists and the shorts are really good. :hv20-smilie77: (click "Vote now" to see them.)

I've been here a few weeks and I just noticed this forum, so I'll upload the only film I've made that I am really proud of.
It is not shot on HD, in fact, calling it SD would be a bit of a stretch because it was shot on Super 8 but here it is anyways:

So does this make me the only contestant? I don't see anyone else who submited something.

Don't really know whats going on with this. But it looks pretty unnoficial lol. So I suppose I'll throw this monolithic 15 minute film I just finished that I'm sure nobody will watch due to length (don't blame you) up.

You could take the dangers of alcohol as a theme. I have seen plenty of high school kids doing stuff like that ...
The more you b!tch against alc in your flick, the more mature the adults will think you are ... nuts

Wow a lot better than i expected. I liked how you set it up with blank cards during narration, although it doesn't really add up that the guy is saying "used to" but... he's dead. Unless you were implying the whole life after death thing, which in that case could have been played up more. I really liked the first attack, when that random guy beat the crap out of him "BRICK" style. The actors were all too young, but i guess that would have been difficult to remedy. The house at the end seemed less like a gang hub and more like an upper-middle class suburban living room.
Gotta say, i loved the "Don"s acting. Had a lot of spirit and though the accent threw me off at first, he really made a lot of the dialogue convincing.
Surprised there aren't more comments on this, honestly...
