Mine's Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0, I guess since I know windows really well and have studied Premiere Pro 2.0. Plus if you have the Adobe Production Studio, it's got everything you need.

I bet this is now a solid performer, unfortunately I still have a bad taste in my mouth from using earlier versions 7 years ago. It was a real dog then, and I never tried it again.
VEGAS here, and FCP sometimes...

Tried Premiere and Vegas three years ago on the same day, hated Premiere, fell in love with Vegas. Loving it ever since :hv20-smilie84:

I'm a Vegas guy too but now that Adobe bought DV Rack to include with their CS3 Production line up I may take another look at it.

I'm a Vegas guy too but now that Adobe bought DV Rack to include with their CS3 Production line up I may take another look at it.

I read all about the DV RACK. It looks super if you can have a good laptop with you in the field as you're shooting. As I recall the software costs around $500. Do you think they are going to include it with Premier Pro? Premier Pro is pretty expensive isn't it? Like over $600?

I am ready to add Vegas to my tool kit. I noticed a Vegas Studio at Best Buy yesterday for about $89. This surely isn't the one that several users are talking about on this forum?

So what one should I be looking at? Can't I just go to Sony's website and download the one I need? Several people have talked about plugins and codecs. Do I need to download anything other than the program to get going with using it for HD capture and edit.

I do have a Vegas around here somewhere that I purchased last summer for around $130 but it is probably out dated. I found it a bit hard to understand so I went back to my Pinnacle Studio 9 but now that I have the HV20 I'm ready to bite the learning curve bullet and get Vegas. Any advice would be appreciated.

Nope, you can do everything with Vegas. That's as far as editing and capturing is concerned. Depending on what you want to output the material to, you'd probably have to buy additional software (for dvd authoring etc.)

Ya. I see the one with DVD authoring included is over $300 so I guess the el cheapo one I see for $89 won't get me VOB files but I could create HD WMF video maybe. I'm lookin' to offer HD video on my website in wmv format for those who can handle the high bitstream. I'd only offer 2 to 5 minute clips. I haven't looked to see the opportunities with mov files but I have been turned off by Quicktime in the past and since everyone on a PC has a Windows Media player and wmv has worked very well for me for the past 2 & half years, I'm reluctant to change and to offer both really eats into the online disk space my provider gives me. Right now I'm offering everything at 640X480 768kb bitstream. With the mov files I've accessed online, I seem to have to download them before they can be seen. My wmv files will start playing within about 10 to 20 seconds even for an hour of video.

Well, vobs are nothing more then mpeg2 files. So, to make dvds i'd suggest a fantastic little app called DVDLAB PRO. It's an amazing piece of software, easy enough for beginners to make a dvd with a couple of clicks, but at the same time so advanced that it can be used by professionals to make dvds exactly the sameas comercial ones. There's a 30-day demo with no limitations, so check it out. Also, there's a freeware app called FAVC which can convert anything to dvd, only it doesn't support menus yet.

To put it simple, you have a looooot of options.

Even though i hate wmv files, i hate mov files even more.

For my money, if bandwidth was an issue, I'd post MOV exclusively. I'm not one of them but there are some really nice people using a Mac, or so I hear.

And yes, Adobe has already announced they bought DV Rack and they are adding it to the "Production Package" of their CS3. They're calling it "Adobe OnLocation". If you go to the Adobe page they are still offering DV Rack as a separate package but I don't expect that to last.

I'm a Canopus fan. Started with EZDV many years ago then on to Edius with a Storm card and currently using Edius Pro 3. It's just so stable, everything in real time, no rendering in most cases, Procoder is great for exporting or converting files. I author with DVD-lab studio and this has been a great set up in the past. I now need a major upgrade, now that I've just got my HV20 [see post under editing] when or where does it ever end? ...........

when or where does it ever end?It won't.

In the early 90's when the first pentium chips came out, a friend of mine told me something that has stuck with me ever since.

"If you think about the computer like a car, these (the first pentium chip computers) are like Ford Model T's."

I think it used to be easier to chose, not today though..many are adding new and very imaginative tools and workflow options that it makes it hard to keep up or even understand what they do

I have used premiere 6.5 with my SD material until now. I have prem pro 2 but have not yet had the guts to sit down properly and use it yet as it appears less user friendly so far.

Vegas Movie Studio includes all yo need to edit video and author DVDs. It's a great price. What it lacks is some of the more advanced plug-ins and colour correction.

My favorite is Avid Media Composer (or Xpress Pro, nearly the same). I work on movies post-production and it's the only soft used in long-footage editing.

The possibilities are enormous, and it's the only I know well ^^!

I started off at school on a program that ran on DOS called Autodesk Animator. I painted frame by frame and did an entire music video of the song Cantaloop on it! I've since moved on to Windows Movie maker, graduated to Ulead VideoStudio 9 and my latest editor of choice is Sony Vegas 7 with the Magic Bullet 2.0 and Vasst Ultimate S 3.0 plugins.

Frame-by-frame painting. Good times.

I started with Ulead Video Studio 7 SE (bundle with something I purchased, I can't remember what), upgraded to 8 and now 10 Plus. I find it intuitive and easy to work with. However it is not a stable program.

Obviously this is all subject to personnal taste.

I wished I could campare. So I downloaded Vegas Platinum trial, and to my surprise, although I like the interface, I have yet to find the quick and dirty wy to splice video (It's not intuitive and it should be.) I wish I would not have to spend hours trying to learn something new...

I imported my 1st project into both programs and my first reactions:
Vegas is very quick to load the video segments
Vegas offers more information right off the bat
Vegas offers more image manipulation options
VS 10 has a better preview pane
VS 10 has a less crowded screen
VS 10 cuts and handles sound very easily.

Not sure, but I think Vegas is geared more toward the prosumer and VS 10 more toward the consumer.

So I have not yet found my optimal solution yet, which seems to be, not unlike the HV20, in between the consumer and prosumer types.:hv20-smilie51:

Hi

I dont have a HV20, but i´m thinking on buying it.
I use pinnacle studio 11 for capturing and editing from my old camera.

I downloaded from this sites some samples of HV20 in .m2t format, which i think is the format of output from HV20.
Is this right?

Only the Pinnacle dont recognize it.
Do you know why?

I would like very much to use the Vegas 7, which is very popular and complete from what i read. Only is to complex for me. Maybe if i had more time and good tutorials i would give a serious try.

Thanks

JP

Avisynth. It's a major PITA to use for editing, but it's 100% free! I'd probably go for something with a GUI if I actually did enough editing to justify paying* for it...

*I realize there are some free NLEs out there, but ZS4 is buggy, Jahshaka is pretty much useless, and anything else I've tried didn't work too great either.

A friend of mine has given me a copy of version 2.6.4 to play with. I don't have mojo or adrenaline so I'm plugging the HV20 in direct. Unfortunately there is no deck listed for the HV20. What is my best alternative?

If you haven't found out yet, just use generic. It works perfectly. I must say though, sometimes it doesn't. But then it does after a reboot.

I am in the middle of a capture right now, I used Canon X1A1 or was it X1H1. Well something like that anyway. I first tried to use HDVSplit and then import, but some of the clips were bad according to AVID but not according to MPEG2Repair. FYI the error was Audio PMM Insufficient Media. Only some of my clips had problems this way. That is why I'm trying the AVID based capture now.

Using FCS2 here.
In the past I have been using Adobe Premiere for DV format. It worked fine too.
FCS2 has much more bells and whistles, especially I like the smoothcam that can clean out a few shakes from an otherwise nice footage

But I mainly prefer FCS2 now for its native HDV editing.

This person works on Liquid Edition.
After quiting Adobe Premiere.
After getting used to the different apprach I am very satisfied with it. Creates sublime DVD's.
But because I am always in for a new adventure, I am thinking to switch to FCE next year.

Vegas fan over here.

I have tried several Ulead Video Studio versions in the past and they all seem too unstable and somewhat bugged. Ulead might be ok as an introductory tool to the world of video editing but once you get the "hang of it" and want to do more with your video, you definitely need to look somewhere else. I have found Vegas to be very efficient and powerful.

There is an awesome tutorial from Lynda.com about Vegas. I seriously recommend it to anyone who wants to quickly learn to work with this great VLE.

I am struck by the fact, that so many people on this Forum use Vegas . . . As in the Netherlands I only know a handful . . . Over here it is only for sale on the web. Is that different in the USA?
Feel kinda lonely with my dear Liquid Edition here . . .
