View Full Version : HV20 Pulldown Tutorial: Opinions Needed

I just got my hands on some really cool software that allows me to screen capture things on my desktop, and I was thinking about doing a video tutorial explaining the hv20pulldown.exe method. This will basically outline the process from step 1 (downloading everything/installing) to bringing it into your NLE program (I have Vegas and PP2). Do you guys think it'll be worth the time putting together this video, or are the methods outlined on various sites easy enough to follow? It'll probably take me a good few hours to do this, but if enough people will benefit from it then i'll get it done. Let me know!

You mean, something like this? ;-)

Sort of. I'm thinking something along the lines of the tutorials shown on www.videocopilot.net. Rather than reading each step, you'll actually be able to watch a video showing you what to download, where all the files go, and then showing the settings and such for whatever NLE's. It's just an idea at the moment, but depending on what everyone thinks I can pretty much make anything with this software.

Of course, I think there would be many people who will get benefits from your work!!!!

Go for it. Although I think that it's faster to actually read and click links to install rather than watching, pausing, typing a url, installing, starting the playback again etc. However, the more tutorials the better of course.

Please start from the very start. Then use sony vegas movie studio 8 all through dvd creation to play on HD DVD player. I'll buy 2cams along with a friend from AlphElctronics when i'm sure how to do the whole 24p thing. Also interested on DVD appearance compared to actual HDMI from camera.

I only have the full version of Vegas, but it will most likely be the same process in both Vegas and movie studio.

As for DVD creation, if someone can put together an easy tutorial on how it's done I can definitely record it. Anyone have instructions on this that I can use?

As for the last comment about DVD appearance, I'm not quite sure what you mean. Are you saying you want to see the difference between playback of a DVD compared to playing back off the camera via HDMI? That might be kind of difficult to show unless you're actually there in person looking at the monitor. I would imagine it's probably going to look better going from the HDMI in the camera to the tv than a DVD would, but since I've never tried it I couldn't say for sure.

I think what I'll end up doing is recording a few different tutorials. First I'll do a video explaining the downloading/installation of the hv20pulldown.exe process. Then I'll do a video showing what to do with HDVsplit in capture and put a short clip through the process. I'll then make another video taking that clip into vegas/pp2 and export it out to the whatever format. If someone can draw up a good tutorial on making a dvd for an HD DVD player I'll definitely do that one as well.

I made a quick little "demo" video to give everyone an idea of how something like this might look. I couldn't find anything quick to do a tutorial on, so I made one up. :) Check out the video and you'll see what the pulldown video might look like.

I would love to see such a video. I've been maintaining a blog with much video shot with the HV20 (www.thelonglonghoneymoon.com).

But right now I'm just shooting 60i with my HV20. If I can't easily edit the material, 24p doesn't do much for me.

Eugenia's tutorial got me through the process awhile back. Thanks so much for putting that together! Personally, I like text tutorials over video ones (different learning styles, perhaps).

$21.83 for UPS Ground for a 6.3 oz adapter. Hmmm.... So much for that $15 discount :hv20-smilie77:

That's why I put on there that it was a demo only. Ground shipping for the adapter will probably be under $20, since you have to consider I pay shipping costs coming in, and then for good packing materials, and the boxes. The zip code I entered was from California too, and the site is assuming a shipment from Orlando to California which is quite a travel. :)

At any rate, ground shipping is free for HV20 members, as is the Rode Videomic. :hv20-smilie77:

It happens to the best of us. :) Apology accepted.

By the way, I'm probably going to be working on this tutorial this weekend, so if anyone has any specific requests please speak now or forever hold your piece. :hv20-smilie64:

Ten Ounce, I would like to see the work flow from DVSplit > PPro (and use at least other unnecessary software if possible). I know you need to have an intermediate pull down software, like TMPENC Express, right? Thanks in advance and look forward to your tutorial.

I was reading the http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/07/13/canon-hv20-24p-pulldown/

I have a footage taken in 24p. I plan to cut a DVD after editing and then play back it not only on my HDTV, but also on my Home Theater Projector (Optoma 720p). So, should still have to remove the pulldown?

Hi Ten Ounce, whatever came of the video tutorial ? I personally love tutorials like this, it is like sitting beside the person doing it in real life and really helps me out.

The link above links to a video, but before I download it, I am wondering if this was a tutorial, or something else, somebody mentioned shipping and an adapter, which would have nothing to do with a tutorial for pulldown removal, so I'm a bit puzzled.

thanks in advance for any info.

Dave.

You never have to remove pulldown. The advantage of doing it is that it makes the motion of your video a little smoother if you play it back on a device that is 24p capable, such as a media player or a computer. The reason it is smoother is that with true 24p (pulldown removed) there are no duplicate frames added to bring the frame rate to 30 (really 29.97), which is the NTSC standard.

I would suggest that the guy learn to remove pulldown. Someday when he does want to do it, he would have known what to do. He may even like the quality of "film-look" as well...

What's up with Ten Ounce's video tutorial...? Chicken out or what ?

thank you for this link..really writted simple..understandable!thank you..
you write:"ut if the TV-set is not your (only) final destination for your video, then the pulldown removal must be performed the right way before you start editing your footage"..but,what can be anhoter final destination ,for example?i i ask you this thing, for a better clarification.thank you.
