is anybody expecting the XH A1 to drop in price, now that the A1s is coming out? I thought the situation seemed kinda' similar to the FX7 situation with sony. :hv20-smilie51:

I don't think the S variant is actually shipping yet, but the XH-A1 has dropped $150 at B&H. There should be several things happening between now and April, so several things will change. The S isn't that big of a change though.

I dont think prosumer cameras have a price drop...they just stop selling them, look at XL1's and XL2's still very expensive

Well there has been a 5% drop already because the MSRP of the S is the same as the MSRP was for the A variant or the original. I just don't think there will be a huge drop until there is a major replacement.

Looking into my time machine, here is what I'm going to guess.

Canon won't release new firmware on the 5DMk2 until the scarlet ships in quantity because it will hurt it's other video camera line sales.

Canon won't release a new video camera in the XH-A1 replacement category until the scarlet ships and it's forced to counter that.

{Of course, my time machine get's a little confused sometimes and I have no inside information. That's just my guess because it's what I would do.} :hv20-smilie99:

You need to get a new time machine. The Scarlet isn't competing with Canon on a scale large enough to matter. And more importantly what does the Scarlet have to do with the 5D Mark II? I haven't seen any specs with the Scarlet that are similar to it, and they SEEM to be implying that they don't wish, or want to build a similar camera as the Mark II.
If you avoid the Scarlet forum users and go by what Jim himself has said, you would have no reason to believe that a 35mm sensor, or/and interchangeable lenses is going to be the big surprise.
Reds cameras haven't even gone that route of thinking EVER.

My local Fry's store still offers the GL-2 for $2.3K for crying out loud.

In regards to A1 upgrade or price drop, the only two rivals of it are the Sony HVR-Z5 and the Panasonic HMC150. Both offering the same true progressive recording, true progressive sensors and both priced around $4K. The A1 has interlaced sensors, but its resolution is probably on par with the HMC150 and maybe just slightly less than of the Z5. With about $1K price difference I think that the A1 is in a pretty comfortable zone right now. I am not expecting price drops unless Sony starts the price war.

EDIT: Looking into my time machine, I can see (at least, I am expecting) Canon releasing an HD version of the GL-2 for $2K to compete with the FX7. Canon should win as it will be a new camera with a progressive sensor and with native progressive recording (of course). I am sure this will happen within next six months, otherwise I will officially proclaim Canon market analysts to be complete idiots.
