Got an HV20 Recently, lots-o-fun. Still searching for some simple video edit, i used to use a Canon Elura 40 with Windows Movie Maker, all i cared about was video capture, and cut out the crap.

Been pokin' around the forums, seems like most people use
Adobe Premiere
VEGAS
Ulead Video Studio
Final Cut
Magix Movie Edit

Dont suppose there's any free prgrams out there that are worth it?

Any opinions on the Ulead Video Studio? i tried Adobe Premiere, a few versions, it seems to only be able to control the camera (play, pause, rewind, ect.) but not actualy capture the video, displays a "please reset the camera" message at the top of the "capture video" screen. i've given up on trying it. Ulead seems to work fairly well, any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Premiere has a superb capture utility, and Vegas has a pretty good one too. I use Vegas, and it's vidcap6 utility allows you to control the camera's transport mechanism, capture the entire tape in one hit, or enter the timecode for capturing individual scenes.

Probably the best value video editing software I know of and have used is Magix Movie Edit Pro (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Magix-Movie-Edit-Pro-Plus/dp/B000JQIJZI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/202-5552010-6256653?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1186557070&sr=8-1). It's not well known, has a few quirks (what editing program doesn't?) and it a great program to start out with. It, too, allows all-at-once and batch capture.

Downloaded a trial version of premiere, doesn't seem to work with the hv20. i can control the tape, rewind, play, stop, but it doesn't let me actually let me capture the video. anyone else have this issue with adobe premiere? so far, Ulead Video (by Corel) has been the only one i've tested with success.

i'll try that magix movie edit pro tonight.

You may want to try a freeware program called hdvsplit

it will do all capturing for you as well as split the files for you for when each scene starts, the files it creates can then be imported into your fav editing program.

I find it useful for use with my hv20, to grab a whole tape, and it automatically splits the scenes so i dont have to do it later.

Magix Movie Edit Pro 12 is my favorite NLE so far.

From the Magix MEP forum:

The new DV and HDTV cameras have a big problem loosing detail and color in shadow areas of a sence even shot outdoors.

I took a HDTV clip and destroyed the color with a non linear process, much like you find in faded movie film and photos. Then I took the destroyed clip and ran it through my AVS-p HDRagc restoration filter. On the restored clip you see more colors, brighter colors, and the dark areas on the sides and in the shadows are gone. Working with just the original clip is even much better.

Its worth your time to learn both Virtualdub(xxx) and Avisynth programs, and Magix is <supposedly> the only NLE out there that can receive this process from multi frameservers with no recompression.

If you use Vegas, you'll need to choose the Internal capture program - not vidcap6 - for HDV (you still get full device control). It will also automatically detect when you started/stopped recording and create separate clips for you.

I too have an HV20 and tried it also with the "tryout" version of Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.

In the capture screen, the record button is greyed out, and therefore you cannot capture from the HV20 with the "tryout" version of CS3.

When I spoke with customer support at Adobe, I was told that the capture interface will capture from the HV20, but because on the camera it is a MPG stream (TS on the tape, and PS (transport/program) on the captured file, the capture interface for the "tryout" version has been disabled. This is because of a licensing issue between Adobe and those that hold the copyrights for MPG.

The workaround: spend the $799 or so to purchase the program, and you have 30 days to work with it and see if it will work for you and your setup. If you don't like it, you can get your money back, according to Tech Support at Adobe.

You can use the AVCVideoCap tool that comes with the apple firewire developer kit to capture a video. It will be stored in the raw camera format m2t and you can play back with mplayer
