View Full Version : Pan difficulties
Hi
Why are pan shots so jerky, even in good light I cannot get smooth pans unless I go really really SLLLOOOOW, is this just the way it is for cheaper cams or do the more expensive ones have this difficulty as well, I am not using 24p and I am using a Pal version, does anyone have any tips to help me with this, I am at the moment just resigned to the fact I can't do pan shots, which is a shame.

Where are you seeing the jerkiness? In your NLE after capture, on the LCD screen of the camera, on the rendered video file?

It seems there's something about it.

I played with the camera in a bestbuy store. I instantly noticed the jerkiness during panning. It looks like some footage with the wrong interlaceing field order.

Are you panning with or without a tripod?

Yes, what neocastillo asked. And also: what were you watching the footage on? The LCD of the HV20?
Sorry I haven't answered for a while I have been locked away in a studio, To answer the question with or without a tripod seems to be the same.

I was playing with the camera in a retail store. The panning jerkiness is noticable in the LCD screen.
You say you weren't using 24p, but were you using 25p?
The reason I ask is because if yes, then what you call jerkiness would be an effect of the lower frame rate (as opposed to 50i or 60i interlaced).
That's been a known fact from the beginning of motion pictures (shot on film). One of the downsides of getting video to look & FEEL like film (i.e. 25p, or 24p) is that pans are limited to quite slow speeds. That's the drawback of getting film-like appearance.
If you are getting jerkiness whilst on 50i, then there's something wrong though; as 50i should be pretty smooth. Of course, you might need to adjust your shutter speed also, because if you check it with a fast shutter (i.e. 1/100 or so), it might appear jerky also.
That's not the Hv20's fault though, that a matter of physics! :)
