View Full Version : Exporting to Tape with Premiere Pro 2

I captured some HDV24p footage to Premiere Pro 2 and edited the footage (mostly just cut it up). Now I want to export to tape, but when I go to the export settings in Premiere, the "Export to Tape" option is grayed out and I cannot access it. I made sure I was in the in playback mode on the camera and even tried record. I also made sure that the HV20 and NLE were able to communicate by going into the capture window and doing a little rewind ffw action. Any ideas on why I can't export this edited footage back out to tape?
Thanks.

You must be at the timeline otherwise the export to tape function is greyed out in the file menu. Just click on the timeline before going to the file menu.
Than there will be some rendering and only after the rendering is complete you can record to tape(this would be standard interlaced hdv).
please tell if that helped.

Look at the Adobe site page, it said exporting in 24F timeline will fail.

you have to convert it backto m2t standards

What program do you recommend for converting back to m2t?

I have the same problem. I tried to export to the tape but every time (about 5min) it's shouts down every time. I don't think is PP, just the cam but I'm not sure. I'm using PPCS3 (premier pro cs3) It's not PP2
Need help please.
Im in a PAL country and don't need to that shitty pulldown crap. And it's 25fps. not 24fps.
I recorded in HDV, Tv-mode, 25fps

you can't store anything progresive on tape.
in order to print to tape you have to do telecine. the inverse process you've just removed (the pulldown stuff).

okey even if i haven't done a pulldown? i have to inverse the process?
then i ask. How?

pulldown is only a part of telecine process. wikipedia has lots of info.
render your project as 50i
even if you've used 25p on the tape the camera has it interlaced, it automatically does telecine in order to match the pal or ntsc standard so when you connect the camera to your tv the tv gets something it understands. if you'd output to dvd there are dvd players that detect telecine and do an inverse telecine on the footage and you could actually get 24p/25p on your display if it's a progressive display (like a pc monitor or lcd tv), check the manual.

The only way to enable HDV recording back to tape in PP2 is to install PP v1.5 as well.
There was a licensing arrangement with 1.5 that was dropped in v2.
So you have to have both programmes on your computer.
You can still do all your work in PP2, it just picks up the HDV function in 1.5 when you go to export the HDV back to tape.

That's not true. I can successfully record HDV m2t file back to MiniDV tape no problem using PPro 2.

After numerous attempts, I was never able to export more than 4-6 minutes of video back to the HV-20 after editing in PP2.
I opened a Tech Support Web Case with Canon - not a very satisfying experience. In general, their position is that the Export function works OK with cameras other than the HV-20 (and a few other "professional" Canon cameras) so it must be a Canon problem. When I pointed out that other NLE software does not seem to have the same problem exporting to tape, Canon responded:
"With the HV-20 being a more recent model of camera it has not been tested for compatibility with Premiere Pro 2.0. (The HV-20) is not an officially supported camera model. As for compatibility with Premiere Pro CS3, we do not have a public list of makes and models available yet.... I hope this information helps to resolve your issue."

Taky, I am glad you are able to do it. Many of us cant. Mine stops after about 3 minutes. I installed PP1.5 and now i have no trouble.
May I Re-word the advice.
"If you have trouble exporting "HDV" back to tape in PP2, then install PP 1.5 and it should solve your problem."
My current difficulty in PP2 is creating M2T files. The settings tell me this and that, and I have never got them right yet!
Oh......... I have just thought of something. Most of my HDV stuff utilizes Cineform Aspect HD. Maybe that makes my advice a bit specific. Sorry guys. I hope I have not misled you too much.

To get .m2t files out of PP2, you need to use the Adobe Media Encoder, choose mpeg2, then choose which quality you want. Although I think the best output is 1080i/60i 15 mbps VBR. When you are saving you file you will see the .m2t extension.

I'm looking at the Adobe Media Encoder setting. The preset should be "HDV 1080i 30". HDV uses a constant bitrate of 25mbps. The "Field Order" is also different between these 2 presets.
