What it is I have to do is do what needs to be done, Dylan! Glad I could clear that up for you. :hv20-smilie03:
Let's get this party started! Perhaps, in the spirit of the season, an all hollows eve challenge is in order. Unless, of coarse, you’re all a bunch of scaredy cats!

Halloween has so much stuff to work with! Just a simple Halloween theme. Anything goes. 5 minutes or whatever.
That would be sweet!

You do realize that you could make a short film without a structured competition within which to produce one, right? That would be even sweeter. :D

haha that it would.
although a holloween theme would be interesting.

I guess I could just do that, I just thought it would be nice to make it a fun contest. If you don't have any prizes to win, can you use licensed music and stuff?
Mr. Loveless

I wouldn't suggest using music you do not have rights to use, ever.

Dont fall for the hype Dylan. If you put up a contest with less than 30 days to submit during a holiday season ......you'll be disappointed with the turn out again.
If you're gonna run another one do it on your terms, not cuz Holloween sounds fun. If the next one crashes I doubt there will be another. I think alotta people have tossed out some great ideas on how to handle a contest so that it bears fruit.
Flint Loveless
2008 October 2nd, 18:40
Maybe not a contest, but encourage people to post a scary shot or something. I just love this time of year so much I just wanted to see what everyone else could come up with. 1 minute clip or something? Who knows. It would be a shame to let Halloween go to waste.

I had plans but i haven't gotten around to finalizing them, i've been incredibly busy lately. Maybe ill put up a "short" HD shorts, like a one minute thing, with a Halloween theme. Simple voting (like the first HD Shorts) and no huge prizes. Ill see what i can do.

We should make one later on that encourages storytelling and dramatic refinement, know what I mean? Maybe pin it down to a certain theme, like for instance, non-reciprocal love, death (excluding car explosions or whatever), double standard, etc. But certainly focus on more real and character-driven short stories.
What say you?
koolpenguin89

I don't think that will go over very well with all these people that think themes make them un-creative.
Dylan
Carlos
2008 October 4th, 12:19
I would suggest an open one. I like themes because it pushes my creativity, but sometimes I like using my own theme for contests.
Let's get it started koolpen! let me know if you need help. Tk

Well im going with the short shorts idea, because i don't have the time to deal with a full contest. Their will be a halloween theme, and the films will be limited to 1 minute. Sorry if this disappoints anyone, but im just really busy. Look for it shortly. (no pun intended).

This could evolve into a discussion about regular contests. ;)
Although I would love a monthly or bi-monthly contest (maybe with short-shorts only for every second contest) I have no idea how much time it takes for the moderators to organize them.

It'd be cool to have regular contests.
Flint Loveless
2008 December 6th, 17:11
One every other month would be sweet! On the first of the month the theme could be announced and it's due on the last of the month. The next two weeks consists of voting and we rap it up with a two week break until the next contest theme.
Some people need to be pushed and I say we push them. Also, it would be great if you could keep the time frame open. Movies anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes. I think leaving the time frame open allows the filmmaker to produce work they feel the most comfortable with. Also, the length of the film doesn't really pertain to the quality. I don’t know, maybe I’m an idiot.
-Flint
PS. Yeah, I’m an idiot. Ignore my whole, “1 to 5 minute” thing. That’s stupid.

2008 December 7th, 12:12
I'd support the 'one every other month' idea! Or maybe quarterly contests.
If you need some theme ideas, how about:
- a silent movie.
- a film that contains a montage.
- a film that contains use of a dutch angle.
- scripted dialog that needs to be interpreted and filmed in our own ways.
- a story that utilizes the color red.
- a story that features daisies.

D'oh… I suppose it's too late for a Christmas shorts contest. That would've been fun!

2008 December 11th, 17:27
What about a contest with the theme 'New Years Resolutions'?
Could be a lot of fun. There should be enough people with spare time right after Christmas if closing date is the 29th or something, and a few are likely to have new toys to play with as well :hv20-smilie03:
Not sure if anyone has the time/energy to organize it, but I think it could get a lot of entries.

What do you guys think about prizes? If you could do without, maybe we could get some work off the teams back and make an Unofficial HV20.com contest now and then?

Why not? We don't need no stinkin' prizes. The accomplishment is good enough.

So guys, I have decided not to do an HD Shorts 3, at least not right now. General lack of interest amongst the members, along with the recent expansion of the forum have influenced my decision. Im not writing the competition off completely, it just didn't seem to make sense to do it now.
I was thinking maybe instead of a film competition, we could do more of an awards type of thing, like a mini-oscars for only the HV20.com community. Anyone could submit anything they have created and awards could be given for best writing, directing, cinematography, acting, lighting, etc.. Or not, i don't know, Im just trying to get the community involved. Let me know what you guys think.

Hey im kind of new to the forum (but not to film making for sure) im totally into the oscar idea it allows for much more freedom and also rewards people other than the director which is cool to! So im hoping to hear some news soon because school is almost out and if i don't make any films this summer im gonna go crazy!!!
koolpenguin89
2009 April 17th, 17:35
Well the whole idea is that the films don't have to be made specifically for the event, so go ahead and make some films! If and when we start taking entries, any film shot on the Vixia series of camcorders could be submitted, regardless of when and where it was made. Or at least thats what Im aiming for.

I know you were in Flint, as were a couple of other people. But i had only recieved responses from 5 people, and i don't think thats enough to warrant a competition with judges and sponsors and whatnot. Don't let this stop you from making films, just get out there and do it. If i were to get a bunch of people wanting to participate, i would of course reconsider, but i have yet to see anything of the sort.

Can't we just avoid prizes this time around? Or at least another Short shorts would be awesome! Something with a theme. I don't know why I like themes so much, but I think it's because it sets a direction and when you're finished you get to see what everyone else came up with. It's a great way to open up to new ideas.
Give us a 1 minute comp, at least.
I love this forum so much, I don't want to go compete against ex1s!!!!

But do you see my point? You are the only person on this entire forum who even expressed any concern for me shutting it down.
