View Full Version : XP does not see HDV device

Installed Vegas 7e. Plugged in my Canon HV20 HDV camcorder via firewire. Win XP pro recognized the camera (actually said "Canon HV20") and installed drivers. A short time later I needed to capture DV footage from the camera. Switched the camera over to "DV locked". Plugged it in via firewire. Win XP saw new hardware and installed "Canon DV device". Used external capture program in Vegas. Captured my video. Later that day went to capture HDV footage from camera. Set camera output to "HDV/DV". Plugged in firewire cable. Computer still thinks it is Canon DV device (that's what pops up), not the HDV HV20. In Vegas internal capture application for HDV, device is not available. Apparently XP overrode the drivers for HDV device when I switched the camera to output as DV. God - nothing is freakin' easy.

Any ideas?

Update: tried uninstalling the camera in the device manager. First time it uninstalled OK but then reinstalled the DV (not HDV) driver. Tried uninstalling a second time and now the camera doesn't show up at all. Did I mention nothing being easy?

Once you hit CAPTURE and select HDV, there's a capture box that opens in the lower left side of the screen. In there, there's PREFS setting (top left), select that and choose [hopefully] the right device. If in doubt, hit RECONNECT TO DEVICE or whatever it says. If that still does nothing, try and turn the cam off and back on again. [Cam has to be in PLAY mode of course.]

By the way, Vegas 7e still imports the HV20's HDV 24p footage as interlaced 29.97fps unfortunately. They obviously haven't fixed it with this update.

Thanks Mal.

Eventually figured it out. On the third reinstall of the device driver for the camera I saw an entry in the "sound, video and game controllers" in the Device Manager (rather than in "imaging devices" where DV devices show up) for "AV/C Tape Device." The "av/c tape device" is apparently the HDV device driver in Windows. When I went back into Vegas' internal capture I could pulldown the preferences tab and find my camera under the IEEE 1394/MPEG2-TS Device drop down... It wasn't there before.

Yeah too bad they didn't do anything in Vegas about the 24p pulldown issue in 7e. But... we've got a bunch of people emailing Canon now about the issue. Have you sent yours in yet????

Hi Peter - You'r talking about the device driver for the camera. Where can I find it ? Nothing on Canon's CD. The Medion comp. does'nt recog the firewire to the HV20. No way I can presently transfer files. Very frustrating ! Tried several «fixes» on this Win XP Home SP2 machine, to no avail. At one point there was some transfer via HDVSplit soft. but very choppy and thereafter nothing at all worked. Tried WinDv, Win Movie Maker and PrEl 2.0 - Nitch...Nothing doing !

Would be nice if someone could help ! :hv20-smilie45:

From what I understand, the driver is available with XP SP2. It's a generic HDV device driver (though XP will recognize your camera by name the first time you install it.) I spoke to Canon (and checked other sources) and Canon does not write or provide drivers for video (there may be a Windows Me/98 USB driver on the disk but that;s for the still camera function of the HV20, not video.)

If you don't see the driver in the Windows XP device manager, and you're running SP2 (Service Pack 2), you'll probably need to do a repiar/reinstall of XP. However check the other video forums (maybe DVinfo.net): I recall seeing someone who was able to find the right drivers on one XP machine, copy them to a CD and then do an "add new hardare" thing on another machine that wouldn't see his camera. I don't think you can actually pull the driver off the Windows XP installation disc.

The "av/c tape device" is apparently the HDV device driver in Windows.

This is what you need for capturing. There is no HDV device elsewhere in device manager XP for capturing video. Only if you install a mini-sd and connect the the USB cable you will see a new imaging device but only for transferring the stills, not the video.

There might be something wrong with your firewire PCI card: Try another one, they are available very cheap. I use one from Conrad Electronics and it works flawless for 10 Euro's.

Thanks a million to 24Peter and BarnOwl. Today things are shaping up. After installing Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 the system was working well. (Could they have changed the device driver ?) So, Yesterday I could only capture DV but now it's Dv+HDV. WHOAAA..... THE FUN BEGINS. However a word of advice if I may:
A TIP MAYBE: After changing a tape that captured well, the data from yesterday could not be captured from another tape. The pop-up from the system would not come on. I finally found out that on these occurances just flipping the switch to camera mode for a moment result in a pop-up. Switch again to play mode and you'r in business. WHY?? Go find out. It's the mystery of progress that have you spend hours before starting something really useful.

Still, I'm really grateful for your help pals. Till next time God willing !

Sorry seems I've got my cards mixed up in previous message. :
Capture is enabled only when Camera is in DV mode and then will capture DV data only.
There is no capture when camera is in HDV mode. :hv20-smilie15:
Is this the situation that everybody find themselves with HV20 ? Or must I still work on it ?
Thanks for your insights !
Ps. I know that some geeks where complaining about this on the Adobe forum.

I did have capture in HDV mode, but no preview screen. Get rid of Elements 3.0 because it is just not compatible with this cam (yet). Apart from the capture problems, it takes ages to render even on a top notch pc and crashes with bigger files.....I got rid of it and use Pinnnacle Studio 11 Plus now. Hassle free........

Thanks BarnOwl and how right you are as I found out this morning when I finally captured HDV.
I'm getting money back from Adobe. Still, would like to know about Pinnacle. There is a Ultimate version ... is it any better than Plus ? Also, what kind of work are you doing. I want to create a DVD - about 45 min. Will pinnacle handle that ?

Yes, Pinnacle will handle that. I only do very simple editing. For me the Plus version is more than adequate. Personally I only edit menu's, transitions, add a bit of sound now and then, some cutting and pasting and I burn it. That's it!
(My footage is that good It speaks for itself, doesn't need editing.....:hv20-smilie31::hv20-smilie79:)

The Platinum version has the same functionality as Plus, just more effects, menu's and other Mickey Mouse goodies.

Upgraded Windows xp sp2 about a month ago, am dead in the water, new HV20 lots of extras, view screen looks great, but XP doesn't recognize it, very frustrating manual, am made hdv video, trying to export dv, but the manual makes references to settings my camcorder doesnt have
so I go to playout setup,
there is no setup 1 and 2 like in the manual, my choices are:
AV/Phones
Phones Volume
Comp.OUt
Return

it does say HDMI out at the bottom, but that is not a choice.
The manual makes reference to Playout std and DV output pg76 and
selecting AV-DV, but I only have the choices listed above and when you go into them, there is no options as outlined in the manual

I cannot also get the camcorder even recognized by XP Pro, no where it is listed, nor going thru troubleshooting or device manager can I find it.

I have a canon digicam other digicam, sony camcorder, never had this problem before
I live near seattle and if not fixed, this will be junk to me

in addition, Canon apparently has no support at all, no email, no telephone, just an address for North Amierica for distribution in North America.

I tried to capture in xp pro with my main computer both usb and firewire, then did the same thing with my laptop, both with usb and firewire, any ideas to try?

I think I have it set up so that it outputs DV instead of HDV, but I think the manual is poor and likely written by someone who doesn't speak english natively

So now I am thinking I might have a defective camera, I bought it online from b and h and can send it back, but am lost, absolutely lost for a solution to resolve getting video capture into the computer.
I live in the seattle area

Hey bluespoet, My first HV20 went back to the supplier. It had no firewire connectivity. XP did not even recognise it was plugged in.
My second HV20 was recognised but my XP needed fixing. See post http://hv20.com/showthread.php?t=372

Found Pinnacle Ultimate 11 for 83$US and shipping free. Just wondering... you seem sure this soft is at par with Premiere Elements 3. I could not find the number of available tracks on all the reviews I searched. Could you tell ? Lots of talk on the Web about Vistas who has multiple tracks, but it's in another price bracket ! Your version of Pinnacle is 11, how many tracks on the timeline ?
Seems some geeks are afraid to upgrade to v.11 :

Thanks for the info Jeroen. Still, think will wait for more info on that soft. Dumpted Premiere 3 but presently running PrEl 2. So there's no real rush. :hv20-smilie126:
BTW Hv20 is a winner is it not !!! Specially ajusting expo on the run etc. etc !

I had the same dilemma. Trust me, even using a pretty new PC, all capturing/editting solutions show problems IF THE PC IS NOT RUNNING CLEAN. Even now with the new rig and tons of HD space I check if there is no unwanted processes running in the background.
Then I go off line and close everything that's not needed.
Then I start capturing/editing and under these conditions most editing programs run stable.

I am convinced most problems arise not running a clean system.......

How very true and wise. Did I tell you that I was capt well in PrEl 3 (both DV/HVD). But Hdv was so very slow to render (wepg) that it became impossible to use and Adobe was dumpted (as you suggested). Presently I do DV capt with Media Movie Maker. When connecting firewire, Windows pop-up choices are: Win Mov Mak + MyDVD+Nero (won't work)+PrEl 3.0 (won't work, soft removed)+Win Media Encoder9 (won't work).
Still no luck with HDV and still looking for detailed reviews of Pinnacle. :hv20-smilie102:

Interesting - I found out that AUDACITY, a free utility on the Web, will completely remove hum from audio clip. Here is how I work at this moment :
Capture audio data from mic ATR-35S from HV20 with Trial Vegas Studio via firewire;
Save entire movie clip to hard disk as.avi;
Import avi file to Adobe PrEl 2.0 (no rendering necessary);
In PrEl, disconnect audio from video;
Export audio as mp3 or wav file;
Make hum correction in Audacity (in no time at all);
Resave in mp3;
Load in PrEl 2.0;
Continue editing movie in Premiere Elements 2.0;
Save movie to hard drive;
Burn to DVD with Nero 7

Seems complicated but in practice once you have the hang of it, it is very easy.
Hope this might help someone. Cost no $$$
Phil

Ps. As I use 2 monitors all this becomes very easy and a lot of fun !

The above paragraph is from anothe thread.

My question BarnOwl : Is Pinn able to save movie to hdisk as .avi file ?
Realy too bad they have no trial soft.

Thanks again.
