The end search function won't work ... it had been working perfectly ... but now it is greyed-out.
I have only HDV on the tape.

Did you remove the tape from the camera and put it back in? This will cause it to not read the end point.

Whereas I can capture into FCE (HD 3.5.1) configured in the DV mode, (apple power mac)when I configure the HV20 for HDV and 1920x1089 and Easy Setup (108060i codec), have purged user preferences, 15 GB on free space external scratch disk, limit capture to 2GB, limit capture to 30 min, pre-striped tape, I get the message, "Ends of Tape Encountered" anywhere 3 to 5 seconds after capture selected. I do not know what I haven't tried. Must be a cockpit problem, but what???. As above no problem whatsoever capturing in the DV mode. Appreciate any thoughts. Gerry Galleher

After readeing many of the posts regarding capture of HDV, I took advice given and disabled an external LaCie firewire disk drive I was using for the scratch memory, and used the internal Pwr Mac for the scratch memory allocation. Lo and behold, captured the HV20 HDV clips (final cuit express) without any problem. Then re-enabled the the external LaCie HD and transfered the files. back to the LaCie for editing. Wow, what a relief and what an encredible number of hours spend on figuring this out. Moral of the story...spend more times in revieving all the posts on this subject...

Can you explain this some more? Isn't the end point 'found' in stead of 'read'?
However it works, the endpoint search is only ocasionally available, but most of the time greyed out. I don't know what makes this happen. I often insert and remove tapes. Then I want to find the end-point to shoot some more, and the option's not there..

"End Search" is not very clever. You need to keep the tape in the camera for it to work properly. When you open the comparment and remove a tape, the counters are reset.
When you insert a tape (it cannot use the timecode for some reason) you will need to find the end of the previous recording manually. Start a new recording and "End Search" is restored.

Thanks for clearifying that!

Do you mean you have to record something, or can you playback over the 'cut' where your latest recording starts in order to find the end of that recording?
Otherwise you could only use the endsearch in the same 'camera session' as where you recorded something in the first place, right?
I'm not with my camera at the moment, I will trial and error some other time.

Dont think so, suggest a test.

Yes, I believe that it only works from a recorded section.

Thanks. And I was beginning to think my camera was having a bug in the firmware.
Sorry btw for being a tiny bit stupid. I read the manual before asking this and thought there was no information about when the end search is available.
I just read it again and I found this note:
NOTES
End search cannot be used once you remove the cassette.
I think end search is only benefitial if you record a new tape, rewind, review some parts and want to go back to recording. I am not sure what happens when you record over old recordings; will it find the end of the new recording or of anything recorded (where blank tape starts)? I'll have to test that sometime.
