I'm still not sure about which software to pair up with my machine and I'm hoping to get some advice. I down loaded Videostudio 11+ trial version and even though I don't have a HV20 yet I was able to import some different clips with various resolutions and play them back, edit, add transitions and save. The system requirements seem to be close to what my machine has. On the other hand I'm reading that Vegas Movie Studio 8 Platinum seems to be very popular as well but the requirements are higher. Another thing I find interesting is that the new hard drive Canon is including Videostudio 11+. Listed below are my machines specs, I sure would appreciate any input. One last question...if I did go with the Vegas as is what would be worst case problems?
System -Xpmedia sp2
Motherboard -ASUS A8N-BR
Graphic card -Nvidia GE Force 6150LE
Soundcard -Realtek ALC 888 chipset
Processor -AMDdual core 64x3800 + 2.0 GHZ
Hard drive -200GB SATA 7,200 RPM's
Memory -960 MB Ram
Monitor-HPw2207
Thank you

I would definitely go with Vegas Movie Studio 8 Platinum simply because it's much more powerful, and it also supports 24p timelines, while no other consumer application does. The HV20 is able to shoot 24f, you see, so this ability might become handy.
The downside is that Vegas requires 2 GB of RAM to work well with HDV. I would suggest you upgrade your RAM anyway. Even VideoStudio will have a hard time with 920 MBs of RAM with HDV (you will start swapping sooner or later, even if requires less RAM than Vegas).

I agree, increase your RAM to 2GB and get another HDD. You need one for your operating system and apps, and one for your footage. Then go for Vegas Movie Studio 8 Platinum.

The HV20 does not shoot fully progressively. It is 3 progressive frames and 2 interlaced inside a 60i stream. That's not real 24p but a variant of 24f.

I beg to differ. As far as I understand it, the HV20 shoots progressively with no interlaced frames in 24/25p mode. The fact that it is carried in an interlaced stream does not make it interlaced. It repeats progressive frames in order to conform to the 60i standard, but those frames are still progressive.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Thank you for the reply, I tried the Vidoestudio 11+...it seems a bit buggish so I'll try Vegas and see how that goes.

Thank you, I'll call the computer wizards tomorrow and see about another Gb of ram and another hard drive. I found that I have a second hard drive (d) but that's only 8GB and it's for system recovery.

You probably don't. This is most likely a separate partition on your regular harddrive.
I will throw my vote in with the rest of these guys. Get a new harddrive, as big as your budget allows, the faster the better, make sure it is SATA. Get one more G of RAM (you should get that no matter what, even for Video Studio). Get Vegas Movie Studio Platinum.
You'll have a fast and pleasant editing experience with, IMHO by far, the best editing app for your budget.
