Canon HV50 Rumors Proved False

Posted by Emily Price

On Friday rumors of the Canon HV50 surfaced on the web. A Japanese "photo" of the camcorder reported the HV50 would have 3 CMOS sensors, and 18x optical zoom, 1080i and 720p recording, 24p capability, and Optical Image Stabilization.

Upon closer inspection, the photo of the HV50 was merely a Photoshop enhanced picture of the recently announced HV20. You can check out both photos side by side here. Camcorder savvy readers will immediately notice the zoom ratio mistake on the lens (6.1mm to 61mm) which is actually a 10x zoom (like the HV20) rather than an 18x like the reported HV50.

Once message board visitor on DvInfo actually contacted Canon and received this response:

Of course it's an obvious fake, but for future reference, here are some easy ways of checking:

- zoom ratio mistake (6.1mm to 61mm equals 10x, not 18x)
- some buttons have no labels
- the addition of "S" in the "Instant AF" and "Focus" labels
- strange positioning of "3x" to describe "3 CMOS"
- strange positioning and style of RGB color logo
- big EVF at the back doesn't fit properly (one edge is sticking out oddly)
- Japanese writing is not correct - weird non-native grammar

But its a pretty good job of retouching!

It looks like we'll all have to wait a little longer for a new release from Canon.

Goes back to Feb or March if I recall correctly.

Really? I bought one 2 weeks ago, threw my HV20 in the bin. The reason some of the buttons dont have any writing on them is because they are software programmable. Like the one beside the LCD flap, I've got it programmed so if you hold the button down and use the joystick to set your gain. Very useful at night.

yea I saw that I while ago, and I must admit it looks cool and specs would be awesome, but if a real model such as that did come out, I would expect it to probably be priced around $2000 and I would rather save and get the XH-A1 than the 'HV50'

My new HV 50 is fantastic
the 3 cmos design is great in low light.
Really great for shooting UFOS, can actually read the license plates now..:hv20-smilie58:

UFO's?

Thought it was more UFB's - Unidentified Flying Bullsh*t!

I have an HV200X

It has 4 CMOS sensors - one each for each of red, green, blue, and white. the viewfinder is moveable, the LCD screen is 6 inches hi-def and has a built in flip switch.

It takes interchangeable 35mm Canon lenses, has a built in tripod and surround sound microphone. It can use tape, SD cards, or HDD for recording.

It also takes me to work as it doubles as a hybrid helicopter/hovercraft. Witha firmware hack it can solve world poverty.

But the damn thing uses so much energy that if I use it for more than 30 minutes, the earth's temperature rises by half a degree.

Ah, well... no camera is perfect.

the 200x is nice, I did borrow one once and shot the neighbor's dog , what was nice was the phaser setting, (can't believe I accidentally set it to "kill" instead of "stun") ooops! ....left no trace, though..

UFO's?

Thought it was more UFB's - Unidentified Flying Bullsh*t!

Actually... I have always wanted to call them IFO's... since their identity is in-fact proven by the Lone Gunmen to be Extra Terrestrial... Which would make them Identified Flying Objects... and also... aren't they aircrafts... not objects? so then they would be IFA's... Identified Flying Aircrafts... And also... their alien origin should be in the description which would make them IFETA... Identified Flying Extra Terrestrial Aircrafts...

BUT! on the other hand... They do fly in both air and the vacuum of space between planets and galaxies... so it would be IFISETLDSC's... Identified Flying InterStellar ExtraTerrestrial Long Distance SpaceCrafts... at the very least...

And according to the Abyss... they are amphibian too and their luminant behaviour should be included... so... IFAISETLDELSC Identified Flying Amphibian InterStellar ExtraTerrestrial Long Distance Extremely Luminant SpaceCraft

So... Please call them by their rightly name... You videotape those IFAISETLDELSC's... If I may...

Also... I prefer to videotape them in the newly hacked mode on my HalV9000's Full Color nightvision with Heatvision coupled with Infrared lights and a shutterspeed of at least 500 000/1 to get the extremely clear images from my viewpoint of the Alternative 3 apartment during Jupiters Eclipse... I so would like to upload some footage on my TaunTaun but the galaxy council won't let me in to the Encyclopedia Galactica just to get the latest hacked Firmware to unlock a UV-compatible shooting mode...

Aw well...

Here's a smiley drinking coke instead... :hv20-smilie71:
