Since I've just given my HV20 to my brother I'm looking at getting something else. I'm very inclined to just buy another HV20 or HV30 but before I do I want to check out the competition. Having the 24p or 25p mode is pretty cool in my opinion and it's what I use nearly all the time, so I need (read; would really like) a camera with that ability. I've also started looking at more expensive options for some reason, even though I would be stretched to afford it.

Basically, I'd like to hear about other camera's with progressive shooting and obviously with HD capability! I'm kind of assuming there is nothing apart from the HV30 under $1k so what are the options under $3k for example (going by possible second hand values).

Many Thanks

All the new Canon cameras, AVCHD and HDV, do 24p (for NTSC versions only) and 25p (for PAL versions only). The new Panasonic SD9 also does true 24p too I believe.

okay there isn't much out there yet, canon really pioneered the consumer cam with 24p, i'm thinking that the SD9 having it is a clue that other companies might start putting it in. i guess the future holds many things for us. other than that you'd have to buy an XH-A1 (which would be great) or a HVR-V1U (good cam also. terrible on board mic though so you'll have to buy one) or an HD110U (one of my favs and one of the first big 24p hd cams for the pro sumer world. great stuff.)

So it seems if you really want progressive footage then you need to stick to an HV20/30 (assuming you want tape) or spend 5 times as much on something far more prosumer. Thanks for the heads up.

forget the SD9. Check out the SD100. Great camera! 3MOS

From Trusted Review;
In the best lighting, the HDC-SD100 produces incredibly vibrant colour. Point-and-shoot users will be very pleased with the results. But the more professional end of the market will be after a more naturalistic look, and we would like to have seen controls for toning down saturation a bit, as found with Canon’s HF10 and HF100. Performance is still excellent, though, and footage is noticeably sharper than the HDC-SD9. But it still can’t quite reach the benchmark set by the Canons – one large CMOS clearly has the edge over three smaller ones.

Looks like it doesn't like up to the Canon's (the AVCHD ones in this case) which logically puts it another step below the HV20/30.

If anything, I want an upgrade!

Does the sd100 shoot 25p (Pal) or 24p (ntsc)? is it worth getting over the hv30?

Shoot native 1080p24 with the Panasonic HDC-HS100 and HDC-SD100 (http://www.avchduser.com/articles/panasonic_hdc_hs100_24p.jsp). I assume that the 50Hz model shoots native 25p.
