The time has come for the HV20/30 Forum community to vote for the winner of the the HD Shorts 2 Competition. The theme was Fire (Heat, Warmth, Flame). So, without further ado, here are the films*:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Title: Sweat
Entered by: curteasler
Equipment Description: HV20, Canon WD-H43 Wide Angle Lens, Rode VideoMic, Cut on a custom PC with Soney Vegas Pro 8.0
Production Description: I had planned to submit to the last contest but ended up moving from Nevada to South Carolina during the production period. And now I've waited until (almost) the last minute for this one and have put together a movie which I'm sure will stand alone in the fact that there is absolutely no artistic merit, no beautiful shots and probably no redeeming qualities other than being shot with a Canon HV20 which I have found to be the ketstone in my production. Wonderful camera, wonderful forum.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Title:Cafe Heat
Entered by:jaket
Equipment Description:HV20
Production Description: Justin Is in for a hot day at the beach when nothing turns out the way it seems
------------------------------------------------------------------
Title: Fried
Entered by: AlanK
Equipment Description: Shot with Canon HV20
Production Description: This is my first HV20 flick. Whole movie was shot in four hours (it was very quick shooting bucause actors had very little time for me) and edited in three days with Sony Vegas 8. Color grading was done with MBL.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Title:Green
Entered by: Damon Stea (hubrisincarnate)
Equipment Description: hv20 naked
Production Description: army men in a lawn with one voice actor
------------------------------------------------------------------

Fried was very well done. I'm interested in hearing more on all that went into making that.

I also voted for "Fried". There was a lot to like in each entry, but "Fried" felt most complete. "Sweat" and "The last cigarette" both get the silver medal from me.

i voted for "Sweat". Perhaps it doesn't have any artistic merit, but it did keep me entertained and made me want to pass it around.

I enjoyed Fried as well. It really seemed like a lot of effort and the look of it was appropriate. It reminded me a lot of Christopher Nolan's "Doodlebug" which I liked too.

Sorry I cant share your enthusiasm for "Fried". It had a very nice look to it, but I just wanted it to end. "A" for editing.
Sweat was a really great idea and very entertaining.
Cafe took lots of effort to make it seemed and was overall done well except I found myself a little lost trying to follow the story.
LAST CIG was not made for this contest. I dont know if that matters but that short is old and Ive seen it on Vimeo before this contest was even announced. Wasnt as good as others IMO.
I thought Green Army, as simple as it seemed to make, was the best use of imagination and very entertaining. I could see what the filmmaker was trying to convey quite clearly. Very simple and very well done.

I believe that does matter... I'm quite sure the rules clearly state that all entries must be made during the competition time, so if this is accurate I believe that would disqualify the film.
EDIT: Yes, in fact this is stated in the contest rules... "Films must be made specifically for the HD Shorts 2 competition."

OK Just to clarify my statement on Last Cig. Do I know exactly when it was made? No I dont of course not. I cant say for sure when exactly it was made.
However, what I can say 100% is that I have seen this short before. While doing research on the purchase of the HV20/30 I wanted to see footage shot from the cam and did several searches on vimeo with keyword "HV20" and came across this short. This would have been around June/July. So at the very least this video was absolutely available for public viewing WELL before the "authorized" release date of Aug 25th as stated in the rules. Maybe the video was shot and finished within a few days of the announcement and then immediately placed on vimeo with a description of "shot on HV20 with ???? dof adapter" because thats how I found it. Or maybe this short was shot whenever placed on vimeo and just laying around when the announcement was made of the contest. I dont know, but what I do know is that it most def has been on vimeo for public viewing prior to Aug 25th.

I don't understand why "The Last Cigarette" made into the competition, either. I voted for "Fried" because it felt the most complete. But I have got to be honest here, I personally felt that none of the films were that great this time. Everything seems slapped together and feels like there is some pieces missing, just my 2 cents.

While I also am not very enthusiastic about these shorts. I do applaud them for actually creating something. Something I failed to do for this competition.
I was a little shocked to see that someone might try to enter a video that was in violation of the rules.

is the google cache file from July 28th. 2008, You have to scroll a bit to find it our just search the page for his name "mohabitar". Also a google search showed this video listed on more then a dozed other sites. All of which were removed, my guess so he could enter it into this comp.
He even posted it at the beginning of August on videocopilot.net ( http://www.videocopilot.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=681 ) It shows a dead video link, but it is also time stamped.
just google "The Last Cigarette mohabitar" (with out the quotes) there are two pages of sites with his video listed. All of them have dead links. Some have comments on them still that are dated with July.
Just thought i would look it up and see if the rumors were true. It is a shame that they seem to be true.

You guys are a lil harsh. I honestly think that all you have to do is make something and you're a winner (that happens to be literally true in this case lol).
Never-the-less I know you didnt expect Tarantino in any of these shorts this is at best an amateur film-making forum. Sure some of us with very little experience are gonna go out and slap something together which is more than likely gonna look off because it may be the first time we used FCP or Vegas or a DOF or etc.
We've all seen "firsts" from some of the top guys Robert "Last Mariachi" guy (forgot his last name....His first short was a lil boring....I think Lucas had a first short that sucked too....so lol.....yea dont expect too much but perhaps enjoy finding the pearl in the group instead of expecting them all to be good.
Id love to give it a shot one day when I learn how to use everything. And Im sure it'll suck so I apologize in advance.

I agree to a point. I mean, no one is expected to love all of the films, but if someone doesn't care for one, post about ways it could have been better. Maybe link to some threads about subject matter that could have helped improve the films. :)

I voted for Fried. Sweat had it's moments, and Green Army was cute, but I think the editing in Fried did it for me. Great job everybody!

I agree I think the contest theme "heat" made it difficult for a lot of people, myself included, to create an idea that would be appropriate. I had an idea but when I submitted it, apparently it was too borderline and I was encouraged not to enter. It didn't make me upset I just couldn't really make the theme fit and feel right therefore I didnt compete. I am still going to shoot my script it just wont compete.
