I'm using an external mic - and am able to hear it through the HV20 via headphones. The record level displays on screen. But I am not able to adjust the record level with the Joystick Guide. When I pull the Joystick Guide > Mic Level adjuster up the + and - icons are gray, and I'm not able to adjust.

ok... found the resolution to this. A little quirk of the interface: you press SET on the joystick to bring up the JoyStick menu. Scroll through the options and (assuming you're in manual mode) when you get to EXP (exposure) tap the little arrow AT THE TOP OF THE center dot - JUST ONCE. This TURNS THE EXPOSURE ADJUSTER ON. You can then adjust the exposure.

This is a handy little tool that extends your exposure capability beyond the aperture adjustments (AV Priority) in the main menu settings. I find that this control only gets me down to an F8.0 - and often in outdoor settings dropping below this is desirable.

Yes the joystick operation interface is a bit lame me thinks...
