Hey guys. I bought the HV30 mainly as a transfer deck for one of my biggest clients. They have a mix of HDV and DV content that needs to be transferred into Final Cut for editing. I am able to play back the HDV tapes without any issue but when I put in a DV tape, it stutters and doesn't playback properly. It will play 3 or 4 seconds OK and then speed up and seem to playback at faster than normal speed with stuttering audio at the same time. I see "12 bit" showing in the display. I have tried several different tapes of DV content and they all show the same symptom.

I have tried setting the playback standard to DV locked as well as the other setting (not sure what it's called) where you choose between HDV and DV.

Any ideas? They will be continue to send me a mixture of HDV and DV content and I need it to playback both formats.

Thanks guys!:hv20-smilie51:

It's not just the fact that it has 12-bit audio - the HV20 will play that back just fine.

Tapes recorded in LP don't necessarily play well on other machines. Mixing tape types in one machine can/could cause problems. Could either of these issues be causing a problem?

Do the tapes play in another machine - either the tapes, or your HV30, could be faulty or out of alignment. If the original deck that recorded these tapes was out of alignment, you either need the original deck, or a professional!

Cheers,
David.

I borrowed my buddy's Sony HVR-V1U to do the transfers and haven't had any problems. Is there a definitive way to tell if they were recorded in LP? These tapes are coming from multiple sources across the country so I don't think that any one machine is causing the issue.

What did you mean when you say that mixing tape types can cause problems? Am I going to cause damage to my HV30 by playing both HDV and DV?

Thanks for your help.

I think using a consumer camcorder as a playback/transfer deck on the scale you are considering is a very bad idea. Tapes recorded on different camcorders, in different formats and on different brands of tape...that's a recipe for disaster. We already know the HV doesn't really like repeated switching of tape brands, and the wear and tear from all this playback will definitely shorten its life. There are also minute differences in tape path and speed from one brand camcorder to another that could impact your ability to do this smoothly.

If you need to do this alot and value the life of your HV, I would look into a dedicated playback deck the type that professional transfer houses use. This seems a poor use for an HV, IMO.

No problem - as the goal of the OP is to play 12 bit pcm LP miniDV tapes

I have similar problem, but my tapes doesn't play at all. I have a dozen of tapes recorded on miniDV Sony HC24 (SD) and I got some error message when trying to play them. Shouldn't miniDV recordings be the standard and compatible with all the cameras ?
