View Full Version : DIY LCD Hood

Somewhere someone here linked to a DIY LCD screen hood. I downloaded the template and tried it but it didn't fit the HV20, so I modified the design. Here is the custom HV20 LCD hood template, for those occasions when the ambient light calls for it.
It just barely fits on a 8 1/2 x 11 page (the image is 9" x 8.5" so rotate 90 degrees to fit on letter paper) so print at 100% and if you lose a little bit at the edges, just guesstimate the line continuation.
Tape it to stiff paper or vinyl (I used a black plastic report cover), cut it out, and fold (up) at the lines. Put a little velcro dot on the curved bits.
It should fit the HV20's screen snugly with no light leakage and allow you to see the whole screen.
Note: The buttons on the LCD will be difficult to access with the hood on.
Enjoy!

WOhoo, finally getting a custom made LCD hood specifically for the HV20.
Frank, I think you got it from the thread 'eye cup'. I haven't even tried the original one, but I'm glad I posted that link. Fits perfectly.
Thanks a lot!

Twoneil,
My pleasure, glad it works for you!

I wanted to access the focus assist with the hood on, so I cut a hole in the bottom that my thumb could fit through.
Then I taped two layers of black nylon stocking over the hole, one inside and one outside (double-sided tape underneath and then black electrical on top for extra strength and looks).
Now I can reach the focus assist button with my thumb, but the hood is still pretty lightproof.

Done!
Printed to card, silver vinyl over one side, black over other.

I agree, it's really easy to make.
I'm trying a different material. I've made a test LCD hood made from a black flat leather bag, but it doesn't quite fit because of it's thickness.
It's looking good thought, with the black 35mm adapter, black leather lcd hood and black external mic;
It's beginning to look like pro with all the black stuff added.

How funny! I downloaded the same template and also had to modify it. I sandwiched thin polyester sheets between fabric and used velcro for the tie-downs. works nicely!
