View Full Version : Firmware flip for 35mm?

Hey all!

Just wanted to get everybody's take on this. I know a 24p flag modification is very unlikely for the HV20 since it would probably involve more than just a few lines in the firmware. I don't really care, since there are viable software tools like NEO HDV that will easily take care of the pulldown issue.

I'm wondering if we might rather expect a flip function in the LCD for those of us using 35mm adapters. I have yet to purchase my HV20, but when I do I want to pair it up with a Brevis. The image flip thing is sort of an annoyance because I don't want to mod the camera itself and void the warranty, and I don't want to have to purchase an additional LCD monitor (at least not right away).

So just how hard would it be to impliment a 35mm flip in the firmware? It can't be too difficult, can it? Seeing as people are able to hack the camera hardware to fool the LCD into flipping the image.

I'm no engineer, but AFAIK the flipping/mirroring of the LCD is handled completely by the mechanical switches (as documented in the "flip switch hack" you mentioned). Since you don't have any menu control of those functions, I wouldn't hold out much hope for a firmware upgrade to change anything in that regard.

Sure, but don't the signals from those switches have to processed by something? Do they not go through the firmware, then?

Also, it would be ideal to impliment the image flip earlier in the signal path so that your menus would be properly oriented, right?

I suppose this might all be sort of wishful thinking since apparently even some of the pro cameras don't have a flip function. Why should Canon listen to a relatively small group of 35mm adapter shooters using a consumer level product? Drat.

Glad you answered your own question, so I didn't have to type all that. :hv20-smilie87:
