Updated software done.
We now have ads.
Merci.

Is that a good thing that we have ads? Oh well, it gives me somewhere to convenient to click when I want to go to BH.

Where is the Adorama add???
And software update? Not another server? (yet?)
Mal
2008 August 9th, 10:25
Server is already updated about a month ago - we now have a quasi-dedicated server.
There'll be more (different) ads as time goes by.

It looks like the ad placement is odd. How about we shrink the logo and move the banner add to the top right like this? I can help with the resizing logo work.

Uhm, they just started today.:hv20-smilie45:
Terrible
2008 August 9th, 16:33
The only problem is that now the site has the "favicon" of the software.
I made a quick one. 2390
If you like it, you just need to put the favicon.ico file in the root dir of the webtree.
I made a quick one.
Thanks for that. I keep forgetting that the software reloads the favicon, and I like yours better than my old one, so I've uploaded yours now.
(Might need a cache clean for it to show up now, but it works...I checked)
Muchas gracias

what I meant was not that you suddenly found yourselves in the throes of wealth, but was actually curious if the ads are going to be paying for the costs of running the website.
Yeah, I knew what you meant; sorry for being facetious.
Yes, the idea is that the ads will cover the costs of hosting the thing. It'll take at least a half year to build up the ads, is my guess.
Kyleman
2008 August 10th, 17:57
I know someone who ran some popular forums at some time. He asked everyone to click the ads several times so he would get some money to help run the site. He got 5 cents per click on most of his ads.
-Kyle
Well, this doesn't work that way, at least not with B&H.
It works by actually buying something from them.
I have no problem with this setup, and it is my go-to store anyway
(both via internet and physically in NYC), so I can endorse them with a good conscience.

Well good choice with B&H. Will there just be ads back to back to back in the same spot up there? or will there be ads all over the place?
I doubt I'd mind either way though.

We're experimenting with using pics of moderator's faces next to all the ads. That should slow the march of newbies into the site.:hv20-smilie77:

I love B&H and ordered my last camera there. But the ad is sort of funny. The Panny gy-hd200 is a nice camera with some great features, but they have it as the pro camera and the XH-A1 as the Prosumer camera.
The gy-hd200 is a 720p camera, so 1 megapixel though the pictures look great. The A1 is at least 1.5 megapixels. I would actually pick the A1 first, despite the other features on the gy-hd200. I'm resolution obsessed I guess.
Anyway, nice to B&H. I wish they had one in California.

I agree. Although I've seen some insane features on the GY-HD200. Like built in image flipping for DOF adapters, not only that, but it flips the footage before it records to the tape! And there was other nice bells and whistles. I've seen some full HD footage from the HD200 and have got to say the the HV20/30 rivals the quality from it (of 720p HV20/30 footage). It's a great looking camcorder, but it's also pretty pricey for the resolution it has.
-Kyle

I think that's "dangerous". The HVX200 proved pretty much that pixel-count means little (or not as much) as other, pro features, lens, processing, etc, etc. It made many pro productions.
I just bought some small Point_and_Shoot cams for the family. The cheaper one was 10MP. THAT'S INSANE. Where will it stop?
You take one pic at the highest resolution and can see one tiny corner of it on the screen.

It has been used by many pros, but when you compare with other images I've never liked the fuzzy feeling of the HVX200, and until the 200A model it had some terrible smear problems. Which means people bought it for other reasons such as speed, manual controls, presets, etc. The A1 has many of those.
Most indies have to live by the cutting edge of "You want it good, fast and cheap, but you can only afford two out of the three. You choose which two."
Depends on the use. 10 mp is excessive on the computer, but should print a pretty picture on a poster for the wall.

But my -now old- 300D at 6MP or whatever prints much nicer than a P&S cam at 10MP.
PS: I have a HP T610 printer and print stuff on 36" wide canvas: looks GREAT on the wall!

Yeah, but if you could pick it up in LA the sales tax would be mostly off set by the shipping fee. I don't know about you, but I like to play with my toys as soon as have the combination of a decision to buy and the money. :)

Is anyone else seeing the "This forum requires you to wait a minimum of 15 seconds between searches" page more often than they should? What did you do or say to piss Taky off Veg? I was having good fun and didn't want it to get personal. But I was running out of stuff to say (somewhat :hv20-smilie79:) and just stopped before it got out of hand. Like I said before Veg, you will not win. Advice: Just stop right where your at (for your HV20/30 forums account sake). :) Maybe Taky's getting tired of messing and joking around, I dunno.

If you're ever in New York, you should go check out the store, it's in walking distance from Times Square...
It's one of the coolest looking stores ever. It has every possible camera, lens, audio equipment, computer, etc. etc. There are also brand-specific kiosks like Canon, Sony, et al.
There are an incredible amount of employees working on the floor, I mean it looks like a couple hundred - no joke. It's the polar opposite of when you have to hunt down some kid for help at a big box store...
Anyway, maybe they will start a national chain someday...

How does the referral link work? Do we have to clear our cookies so that the hv20.com referral is the virgin? What if we already have an account at B&H? Does that trump the referral link from hv20?
Also, do you have an arrangement where we can mention hv20 when placing an order by phone?

We have Sammy's in LA and Orange County. They have a great selection, but not necessarily cheap. Seems like B&H has both with knowledgeable people. The movie industry places can be pricey too. You pay for the convenience.
