Hi,

Please excuse if this seems a daft question. I have not yet bought an HV20 but am deciding between PAL and NTSC versions, NTSC being considerably cheaper although being in the UK I should buy PAL I guess.

I'll most likely want to shoot everything in 24P... and I have read in another thread on this forum that PAL versions of the HV20 do not require a 24P pulldown workflow to produce 24P 'movie'.

Is this correct? And could somebody explain why?

Many thanks for forthcoming advice.
Robin

Just a few threads down is this, reading it will enlighten you a little.

FWIW. I have an NTSC camera in the UK, because it was £270 cheaper.

...because PAL versions shoot 25p NOT 24p.

Ah ok I see. Thanks to the link to the thread explaining it already.

Sorry to post same question needlessly.

Thanks

Sorry to post again but just to be sure as I may be buying in France and I know france is not strictly a PAL format country

If i see the camera advertise as 25p can I assume it is PAL format and for 24p, can I assume that is NTSC?

I can't find NTSC or PAL in any site description....

thanks

PAL and NTSC are actually methods used to BROADCAST video. France uses SECAM as its broadcasting standard.

As far as recording video is concerned, France used the same format as the rest of Europe.

Because we are all lazy and ignorant (actually, just to make life easy) we all refer to the recording methods as PAL and NTSC.

That is exactly correct. If you want a PAL standard then make sure you buy a camera that records in 25p. Before you ask, there are no HV20's that record both 24p and 25p! I assume you are going to be buying from pixmania (france) or ebay. Just make sure you are getting a 25p camera. Good luck!

Excellent. Things are becoming a lot clearer.

Many thanks for the helpful insights provided. I'll now try and find a site that actually has something in stock.

Thanks
