View Full Version : Headphone setting in Play mode reverts when camera is powered off

I have a Canon HV20. I have experienced an interesting issue with the headphone setting in Play mode. If I go into the Menu, select the PLAY/OUT SETUP2 menu and set AV/PHONES to PHONES the output on the AV/headphones jack properly switches to headphone use. If I switch the camera off and then back on to Play the AV/PHONES setting reverts to AV!

This creates the interesting problem that if I turn the camera off and back on with the headphones connected the headphones get slammed with the video signal. This means each time I turn off the camera I have to disconnect the headphones before turning the camera back on. Then, I have to go into the menus and set AV/PHONES back to PHONES.

The scenerio that is most annoying is when I have the headphones connected to monitor while recording and then switch to Play to review what I recorded. (You must go through off to to get from Record to Play.) Because of this problem I must disconnect the headphones, go to Play and change the AV/PHONES setting to PHONES and then reconnect the headphones to review what I have recorded.

Now for the final and equally interesting part...in Record mode this same problem does not exist. If I set AV/PHONES to PHONES from the PLAY/OUT SETUP menu while in Record mode the setting holds when the camera is turned off. That is, once set it stays until it is changed by ME. So, in Play mode it always reverts to AV after powering the camera off and Record mode it holds the setting I last made until I change it.

Can someone else with an HV20 verify if the same behaviour exists on their camera? Any insight is greatly appreciated. It appears to me that this has to be an error in the software running on the camera. I can't imagine the behaviour I have described is a feature. Can one hope for a firmware upgrade?

Yes, same here. I posted this over here:

While we're on "not-so-good" things; another thing that is annoying (to me), is that the headphone/video output reverts to video; unless I'm missing something: the HV20 has a connection that doubles in function for both the audio & video output as well as the headphone output. You have to set-up which of those two you want in the menu. Unfortunately the cam won't remember what you put in, so everytime you switch to PLAY mode, the cam reverts back to audio & video output, which is something I'd hardly ever need. Would prefer if it were HEADPHONE output, or at least STAY WHERE IT WAS SET previously. Quite annoying playing back a clip, thinking one is going to hear the audio through the headphones, only to hear some screeching NOISE.....poor eardrums...

Yes, a firmware upgrade should DEFINITELY address this!

Let's hope....

Mal - thanks. :hv20-smilie70:

It is quite annoying and I'll end up wearing out the headphone jack...

Is reporting this kind of problem to Canon worth doing to increase the probability a change will make it into a firmware upgrade? Or, do they likely already know about the "problem"?

Not sure about telling Canon.

Looking at it from their perspective: I bet they had an engineer's meeting where there were marketing people also there. they discussed it; and came to the conclusion that their BULK customers were the "holiday-cam" people, who use the cam to film their day trip to the beach and then take the cam back to the hotel to view little Jimmy covering daddy in sand.
Making it revert back to AV all the time, might lessen the calls to Canon customer support, asking why they can't get to show their video back to a TV (not remembering that they switched to headphones once before).

So to solve all this, Canon would have to put in THREE choices: 1) remember the previous setting, and 2) revert to AV always, and 3) revert to HEADPHONES always.

Of course, I could be way wrong on that....

Same here and same also on HF11 :-(
Extremely annoying but I guess they had to save money somewhere and then better save money here than in the optics, recording or compression department...

I think my hv40 does the same thing.

Wow, old thread!

Someone should mention this to jollyrogerxp over in the FIRMWARE HACKING thread; maybe he could fix this easily!
