I am trying the new Sony Vegas Platinum suite but when trying to make a dvd (image) it comes up with the following error:
"An error occured while writing a file. Invalid data was encountered when processing a MPEG file"
This happens preparing a dvd, at the building Video Object stage 4 of 4, so right at the end of the whole editing/preparing process.
It is a real PITA, after editing everything this error turns up all the time. I tried it with three different projects, recaptered en re-edited everything again but it keeps turning up at the end of the preparing dvd process.
I even re- installed Vista on a completely formatted and clean HD partition to get rid of it but no success.
I wrote Sony an e-mail but no answer so far and I cannot find a solution on their support side either.
If this goes on, I'll just go back to my old Pinnacle sytem again.......

Ok, considering the feedback here and the rest of the internet about this issue, it seems to be an isolated incident.
But fortunately I solved it and because the slight possibility of someone else here getting the same error I decided to give you the result of my struggles for the last week of solving this thing by quoting the conversation I had with a very friendly Sony Vegas helpdesk representative:

Ok, I succesfully burned the project on cd after a week of headaches......;)
Two things: I found out looking in the help files PAL encoding does not favor your default .ac sound files, so I changed that to .wav.
Furthermore I re- arranged the menu/chapter lay-out.
Eventually these two changes made the initial error disappear and I managed to burn the dvd.
I have been trying Adobe Elements, Pinnacle Studio 11, Ulead Studio 11 and Powerdirector apart from your Platinum suite and they all had issues with a HDV project on Vista Business.
However, I found the Vegas Movie Studio the fastest and most professional application with only this issue. I solved it and I can assure you your feedback, however not helpful in the matter still made me decide to purchase the program.
Thanks and goodbye! :)

Hello,
Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software.
Thanks for all your help in troubleshooting this. Could you let me know if adding the chapters back in DVD Architect Studio allows you to burn them?
I hope this information is helpful. If you have follow up questions or need further assistance with this issue, please update this incident.
Sincerely,

Hello Katy,
Thanks for your quick and informative answer.
The error occurs preparing the dvd, I don't even get to burning.
I actually runned vdub on the rendered file and it reported errors in the chapter flags.
I made a dvd file with 6 chapters and a submenu with animated buttons, so the problem lies somewhere in the chapter links.
I succesfully burned the file without the menu and the chapters so this confirms it. The whole process was done in the trial of Movie Studio Platinum 8 + DVD architect 4.5.
The MPEG is HDV 1080i captured and saved as PAL widescreen DV.
Next step will be to add the chapters again and see how that goes.
I keep you posted........

Hello,
Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software.
Is the MPEG file high definition? Was it rendered using Vegas Movie Studio or another program? Could you provide more information about the file?
Make sure that you have the latest version of the firmware for your DVD burner. Manufacturers frequently release firmware updates that can fix compatibility issues with certain media, general problems, and more.
If you are still having problems after updating the software and firmware, try using a different brand of blank DVD. Some burners may have problems with generic or low-quality blanks.
Make sure you do not have any packet writing software running in the background, such as DirectCD or InCD. If you need to disable these items from starting, you can go to Start-->Run-->msconfig and use the Startup tab to disable them (note that the msconfig utility is not included with Windows 2000 and you may need to uninstall the packet writing software).
If your drive is not being detected by the program, try starting the program without a blank disc in the drive. If you are using an internal IDE burner then make sure you are running the latest drivers for the IDE controller on your motherboard. Be sure that the drive is jumpered as Master, and not as Cable Select. If you are using an external drive which features both a USB and Firewire connection, then try switching to the other connection type and burning again.
If you are using an external Firewire drive and Windows XP Service Pack 2, then download and install this patch from Microsoft.
